Ubuntu?

Sign in to disble this ad
I searched and the discussion in the past on this has been minimal.

I installed this today on both of my laptops. My dell was troublesome because of some proprietary drivers which made the wireless go unbearably slow. But on my HP laptop it's running like a dream. I don't see myself using XP anytime soon, especially for just normal use.

Anyone else using Ubuntu on TB?

I run ubuntu exclusively, I currently do not have a windows install. Ubuntu with wine runs some of my games better than windows.

I installed DSL (Damn Small Linux) on an old IBM notebook, out of curiosity. It seems to work just fine. Linux has certainly come a long way from the days of "programs for programmers, written by programmers." I am not sure that I can wean myself away from some of the engineering tools that are Windows-only, but it's nice to know that there is a free alternative with a small enough footprint to run on older computers.

In a nutshell, why choose ubuntu over other Linux variants?

I just stuck with it because it was the easiest to get up and running on my hardware. I tried Fedora, Slackware, Debian, PClinuxOS, and a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head, and the only one that automatically recognized all of my hardware was ubuntu (I have ati graphics on my laptop). Ubuntu also seems to have the most active support community right now so it is easier for people starting out with linux.

I'm running Ubuntu right now on my laptop. It works great and I can do everything I need/want to do without a problem. I still have Windows XP installed, but I rarely ever boot into it.

I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop....for the most part because my brother really enjoyed setting it up!
I'm not the most enthusiastic person about computer stuff.

But I did look at Vista enough to know that I hate its guts! My laptop didn't even come with Microsoft Office, hardly any supporting software, and the desktop was saturated with links to "Free Trials" of a bunch of stuff I deem necessary. Like a flippin word processor. Linux is free, customizable, and you never got so much for what you pay for.

Even though installing programs, or at least finding linux equivalents, is substantially harder.

I previously ran Ubuntu on a dual-boot machine. It's not bad and it's a good one to go with if you're going Linux. I just got tired of the hassles that are to be expected with an open-source OS. I like to tinker but sometimes I just want things to work if I don't feel like tinkering. Windows usually does. I cannot say the same for Ubuntu. Also, I occasionally ran into issues where something just flat-out was not supported on Ubuntu. It was fun to play with for a while though and it makes one appreciate just how much goes into an OS and what it takes to keep it running.

Ubuntu's strength is the packaging/distributution system which makes it very quick and easy to setup and maintain.

It took me 15 minutes from burning and install disk to having a machine up and running. Within an hour I'd got it tweaked and done some usefull work.

We run a customised version of it at work, and it's been great. Prior to that we had RedHat Enterprise, but took the fees we were paying for that and invested it in developing our own Ubuntu derived distro.

The question comes up often - why choose Ubuntu over other distributions?

The typical potential Linux convert is running a laptop or PC that was built to run Windows, and has all sorts of hardware that needs all sorts of drivers.

It usually comes down to finding which Linux distribution works "out of the box" with your particular set of drivers and hardware. That means trying a few.

Any distribution can work on any system, but it usually takes a little tweaking, which the casual "What's this Linux all about?" user can't/won't do.

The NEXT computer someone buys, after they've been Linux'd is spec'd to work better with Linux, and as such the doors are wide open.

Used it. Didn't really like it. But I prefered it to XP.

I used to be a slackware kinda guy but since i found ubuntu i've completely switched, the only XP machine i have now is my laptop due to drivers.
My works station and home office computer are all ubuntu and i even loading Edubuntu up on computers in classroom to save on licensing for the extra PC i have lying around doing nothing.

And most windows users can pick it up and figure it out.
LOVE IT

I started on on Windows like most people (I think ? well from the late 90s).. Now I have a Mac but all my PCs have Ubuntu. Far better than Micro$oft's OS.

I installed it on my laptop, but gave up because my modem wouldn't work after 8 hours of cursing and something like 19 patches and special add-ons...

I've got Ubuntu studio running on my laptop. Everything but the wireless works right now which is why I still boot to XP most of the time. Haven't had a chance to sit down and fiddle with it yet.

Yeah my Dell was like that. I finally got a different driver, but it was incredibly slow.

My HP worked with no issues. And I'm liking it a lot. Can't wait to try out some of the software out for Ubuntu...
