UFC 81

Sorry for the late recap on the UFC 81 event but I must say it was well worth watching.

Matt Lytle def. Kyle Bradley (TKO)
-Matt "lights out" Lytle was very impressive. He came out with his fists flying. Bradley never had a chance. 33 seconds later it was over. Lytle is definitely someone to keep an eye on in the 170lb welter weight division.

Nate Marquardt def. Jeremy Horn (Guillotine Submission)
-Nate "the great" was amazing in his victory over Jeremy Horn. I was actually betting on Horn to pull through but Nate showed a lot of poise. He attacked Horn right from the get go and never allowed Horn to get comfortable. It reminded me of Horn's fight against Liddell in a way. Horn kept getting rocked with a left and a right and each time he got hit he got a little more desparate. Desparation led him to getting choked out.

Frank Mir def. Brock Lesnar (Ankle lock submission)
-This fight shows that Mir is a true professional and Lesnar is a true amatuer. Despite getting nailed pretty good by Lesnar's fists and elbows, Mir remained calm and pulled through with an ankle lock submission. Mir did not have to do much really. He just had to endure a flurry of punches from Lesnar and when the time was right he grabbed Lesnar leg and it was over. Lesnar did show that he has a lot of potential offensively. That is one big guy!

Minotauro Noguiera def. Tim Silva (Guillotine submission)
Noguiera is the shiznit! How he pulled through was incredible! I was actually feeling sorry for him when Silva was kicking his arse. Noguiera kept trying to take Silva down but couldn't. Instead he got rocked time and time again. His face was all messed up and it seemed like it was a matter of time before Silva would finish Noguiera. Then with a bit of luck Noguiera finally takes Silva down to the ground and he made the most of it. Silva landed on top of him but he easily reversed Silva and choked him out. Amazing!

What did you all think of the fights?

I'm happy for Mir- he's one of the few fighters out there who really seems like a nice guy and not cocky. Brock was only about 15-30lbs more than Mir, but he looked HUGE.

It showed me that Lesnar has a ways to go before he can hang with the top of the class. Once again, we have a heavyweight that tries to knock someone out with an early flurry. If that doesn't get the job done and he ends up on the ground, he's lost. Work on your jiu-jitsu.

Same thing with Sylvia.

If we learned anything from UFC 81, it's that you need to know your Jiu Jitsu. If you don't, it'll come back to haunt you. Quick...

Brock IS huge! Frank used to be very tubby when he made his first comeback fight. He had more of a spare tire than I did. And it showed in that first fight. He fought at 255-260. Now he's down back to his proper weight, and looked perfect. Completely composed, focused, unbreakable.

Brock looked like a badger after a whole bag of coffee beans. He was WAAAY too pumped up and excited to maintain a calm, steady composure. He needs to slow down, and think through his attack plans. Just hammering away will NEVER defeat a BJJ specialist. Mir had far too much skill for him.

I want Brock to do well in the UFC. I want him to pay his dues, of course, but I want him to do well. He needs to concentrate on his attack speed, and get a smooth steady rhythm. If he had that, he wouldn't have jumped in panic when Frank grabbed his leg, he woulda managed an escape. Instead, experience and skill won over fury and force.

TO THE MOUTH OF HADES WITH TIM SYLVIA! HAAAAAHAHAHAHAH!!! Noguiera ate his best punishment, and defeated that giant lunk with surgical precision!!! Oh it feels so great to see that buffoon lose, because he just doesn't deserve that title!

Allright. Frank Mir Vs. Jeff Munson, and Handy Couture Vs. Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera. Minotauro can defeat all three of these heavys.

We saw the event at my local bar. We tried Hooters for Silva Vs Franklin, and it was a totally white trash ghetto-wannabe hoodratfest. Terrible time watching that event. This Saturday, however, WAS FREAKIN AWESOME. Had the whole billards area partitioned off, projector onto an 8-ft screen, multiple widescreens on the sides, straight-shot access to the bathroom, NEWCASTLE ON TAP, man oh man it was exciting. That crowd was JACKED. Nice and friendly crowd, everyone reacting yet quiet and attentive, no booing, LOTS of trash talking, perfect.

I just pray that the next fight Silvia's scheduled for, he doesn't go around saying he's going to knock them out. He hasn't knocked out a guy in a match in two years now, yet he says it before every fight.

Let's see here...

BJ Penn - BJJ specialist
Anderson Silva - BJJ specialist
Minotauro - BJJ specialist

Notice a trend... ?

Lesnar looked ridiculous trying to hit Mir on the ground. Good to see Mir is looking well again! Nog was just class, as usual! He's the man, always has been!

And I'd say Silva's muay thai has played more of a part than his BJJ...

? Anderson Silva tends to tear people out with muay thai, not BJJ. Just because you have a black belt doesn't mean you're a specialist.

EDIT: I was amazed with Lesnar's mobility and absolute dominance on the ground. The guy moves so fast for a guy his size, it's crazy. His striking just sucks, but that'll get better. It IS only the guy's first UFC fight and he was facing one of the best heavyweights in the UFC...

I'm perfectly aware of the fact that Anderson is Muay Thai. He came from Chute Boxe.

But, IIRC, he received his Black Belt from Minotauro. I'd say he's a specialist...

Lesnar really does have great speed and given his size it's stunning at times. At the end there right before Mir grabbed his leg I was thinking "Holy crap, dude!! Watch your legs!!" He got really careless just standing there and completely underestimated the ability of a BJJ practitioner to attack from the ground. I think that there are a lot of people that want Lesnar to succeed (me included) just because of his sheer potential.

He seems like the type of guy that will be inspired and motivated by this loss. I would expect a savvier ground fight next time if it comes to that.

i was really pulling for lesnar, initailly because i can't stand mir. after the fight i was really impressed with lesnar's class, i am now officially one of his mma fans. i thought it was bs that the point was taken and they were stood up, it seemed to me mir turned his head as brock threw a punch. the fight may have ended there, but either way lesnar's game plan should have been to take him down, throw a few well placed punches or elbows and immediately let him up, repeat until he's knocked out.
i was impressed with nog's chin, i wasn't sure how much more he could take from timmy.......its just pains me that randy isn't going to fight anymore, they would make a good fight- although randy isn't half as stupid as heath herring and would finish him immediately after a massive head kick, or at least not let him up .
