Unemployment...?!?

After 24 years in business, the restaurant I have been working at for 4 years is going to be closing its doors forever in one week.

We, the employees, found out at the start of September, but now all of a sudden, it's here. Reality. Tuesday will be the last day for me.

Fortunately for me, my wife and I are moving next week so she can start a new job in a new town. That still leaves me without a job, but at least I've got a new town to contend with.

Anyone been in a similar situation?

Sort of. After 9/11 when half the country was getting laid off, I got laid off on the same day as 900 others in my company. I had the overwhelming joy of going home to tell my family that as the sole breadwinner, I had just lost my job. That was the worst thing I've ever had to do. And no one cares whether it's your fault or not, they just scream you're a worthless lazy bum and you deserve it, go starve. I learned that much from it too. I think today the hate and vitriol aimed at those in such a situation is even worse, to the point you're pretty much treated like the people who crashed planes into buildings 10 years ago. I just hope the people who behave like that never find themselves in that situation or maybe they'd have to re-examine their beliefs in addition to being in a very difficult mess. I kept a job all through this horrible economy of the last several years, but I know what it's like and I get angry to be honest when I listen to idiots ranting about the "losers" and "deadbeats" who have lost jobs and how they deserve it screw em let em starve. Like I said, hope it doesn't happen to them too, but maybe that's what they need to realize what kind of jackasses they are being.

Sorry to hear about your situation. If you're moving out of state, it might help you to visit the unemployment office before you move. There's no reason not to collect whatever benefit you are entitled to. Best of luck!

You are dead nuts on, brother. It's downright sickening to listen to the complete lack of compassion that some people have for others.
