Update on the Job deal.

Well, my old company has signed me back up as an independent rep, and I'm trying to put a self-employed rep group together. I have appointments with some decent vendors at the Fly Fishing show in New Orleans and I'm also looking at a part time retail job on weekends until I get this up and running. The big issue is going to be health care. Being single I'm willing to chance a few months uninsured. Their is no way I could even attempt this if I had a family.

I guess a job is better than no job, but isn't this a bit of a slap in the face?

See if you can at least get some kind of cheap, minimal health coverage. Just in case.. I've had times where I was an independent contractor and had to get my own healthcare and it wasn't that expensive. Of course I was a good deal younger then. First time I had Blue Cross Blue Shield. Second time was regional HMO coverage.

Good luck. Perhaps there's a silver lining in this after all.

In a way yes, but the economics of my territory under their new pay plan (just announced this week) would have been worse than working as an independent. I actually know two other salesman considering asking them for the same thing.

Would working as an independent rep allow you to also take on other manufacturers as clients? If so, that might work out even better for you. At least in audio, independent reps try to carry a broad line of brands.

I'm going to be meeting with other brands at the Fly Show in New Orleans in a couple of weeks. The reason they let me go in the first place was that I had picked up another brand. But I was doing so poorly with them I really had no choice.

Good to hear Burk, and thanks for the update. I don't do any fishing myself, but many of my buddies do. Would you be able to sell them fishing gear? If so, maybe I can arrange a way for you to contact them?
