This is true, but we are not talking about mere beliefs, we are talking about people who think that homosexual people shouldn't share the same rights as heterosexual people for irrational and irrelevant reasons. This is oppression, and thats not very American now, is it?

Maybe this doesn't quite feel like the usual outrage thread because I actually participated...

Crap. All I know, is three pages into this thread I was reminded I better go make a legal purchase next week before I have to start buying illegally again. Just set a reminder on my iPhone. So anyone want to give me the lowdown on the other 5 pages?

Keep arguing over this folks. Gay rights are such a non issue. The majority of folks support equal rights, and equal opportunity in the military. If you don't then you're in the minority. But recognize this. These issues always arrive around the time of elections, so the candidates have something to argue about, giving the people something to argue about and further strengthening the rift between two camps. These arguments no matter what side of the fence you lie, is nothing more than a distraction, so people don't unite over identifying the real issues, and demand answers from future candidates, current politicians, and from the powers that be. If we keep letting the media tell us these are 'issues' then the real issue of our economy and the crooks behind it's collapse will never be addressed. No matter what side of the fence you sit, you need to stay focused.

Besides my day job, I work part time as a bar bouncer (and in doing so am often bored and posting on here via phone). I had a large gay man decide that he was going to hang out with the girls in the women's bathroom. The first time I caught him I gave him a warning. The second time was when the bar owner's wife came to me complaining that she could not use the bathroom because of him. I reached in the bathroom, and grabbed his collar, and pulled him out of the bathroom. I told him that if he went in there again, I was going to escort him out of the bar. He pushed me out of his way, and told me that I could not remove him, because he was gay, and IF I touched him it would be a hate crime

Now this story goes on and on, and the end result was him still whining that I could not remove him, as he was standing outside the bar. I missed the end of his BS, because I started my harley, and the pipes covered his voice...

The pertinent point to this conversation is that you cannot dismiss segregation as being a trait of those who are against homosexuality. I personally experienced it being used as a tool for the manipulation of others, and an excuse for bad behavior.
If you are going to call one side intolerant, take careful consideration of those who are intolerant on the other side, or your point could backfire
Gotta say this reads kind of like the beginning gay encounter story, I think it was the part with the Harley that did it for me.

This will be a big deal, because it will be taken to mean that the limitations for openly gay behavior have been lifted. We all know that not everyone will comply with accepted ideas of decency, and there will be some kind of debacle to embarrass our military...then the gay crowd will be up in arms again, claiming civil rights violations if new rules are initiated..
You are imposing your values on others and judgements on others. Who cares if openly gay military personal will be photographed in drag? People who cannot be tolerant of others' choices. Lack of tolerance is the source of so many of the world's problems.

"We all know that not everyone will comply with accepted ideas of decency..."

You are really going to go there? Since when is it up you to decide what 'decency' is?

While I agree with most of your post I have to take issue with this statement, Maki. Gay rights may be a nonissue to you because you can sit comfortably and enjoy the freedoms of hetero life. People of the LGBT community can not, which is an issue, if only for them.

Actually, i see your point. I posted that in haste. I meant to say that opposition to it creates the distraction. Most people support the right to marry, and the end of dadt. I did not mean to diminish the actual struggle or prejudice experienced by the LGBT community.

Well, I think I knew what you meant. Just thought it should be addressed so as not to take away from the rest of your post.

I haven't read every single post; but hasn't this been a reasonably civil and good-willed thread?

I sure wouldn't do that! Those folks are thankfully a tiny minority, no matter what larger religion they're a part of.

Back at you:
I'll point out that many agnostics and athiests aren't at all against religion, or Christianity in particular.

I'm no literal believer, but I have nothing but deep respect for J.C., and love to read his words and reflect on his thought.

When it comes to the conduct of the armed services, I'm more concerned with things like the My Lai Massacre than I am with whether or not somebody likes to cross-dress.
