Vacation to New York

Going to NY soon. Staying in NY, East Village area. I have never been before. What do you guys like there? Any good music shops you would recommend? I wouldn't mind going home with a new bass. I also figure I will have to eat ~5 meals a day to get in all the great food.

If you are in the east village, you are likely within stumbling distance of my favorite watering hole in the world - Mc Sorley's!

48th st used to be a mecca for music stores. But it is a shell of it's former self. Rudy's has a few decent basses, and that's about it.

Wow nice list, thanks! I'm staying in Stuyvesant Town so I will be able to get to all sorts of cool stuff. It will be fun to go somewhere where I don't have to drive to get anywhere.

We are going to NYC in August, so all this stuff is great. I was wondering about the best brewery to go to. We always try to hit a good microbrewery when traveling.

If you like English style fish & chips, you GOTTA try A Salt and Battery, 112 Greenwich Ave between 12th & 13th Sts. Very small place inside but the deep fried fish is AMAZING.

Its a Food Network place-Chef Bobby Flay did a throwdown against them and lost.

Not only fried fish, they have other fried seafood (scallops, shrimp) plus traditional English pot pies-steak & kidney, beef & onion and chicken & mushroom.

I dont think its too far from where you're going to be but I'm not an expert on NYC geography.

I'm going to try my best to get out to Brooklyn Brewery, been enjoying their beers for a while now.

McSorley's is a brew pub, and Brooklyn Brewery is worth the trip.

The Microbrewery at Chelsea Brewing Company at Chelsea Piers is excellent. The Head Brewmeister is a family friend. Their IPA is absolutely amazing. Chelsea Piers is right on the water giving some nice views. It is at the "far end" of 23rd Street

Brooklyn Brewery is cool too but it's kind of a frat boy vibe and might seem a little out of the way for out of towners.

agreed. its not worth buying a bass in NYC. its less than you'll find from a gutiar center, only more expencive, for tourists to say "this is my guitar from NYC"

although they tend to have some fancy vintage jems. but, for the price..

When are you planning to be here? I'm always playing somewhere in the city, and love meeting fellow TBers.

I'm in NYC Thursday 12th to Monday 16th August. Anybody who takes the time to meet up and sink some beer during my trip is guaranteed moderator favouritism in the amps forum for at least the following year. But don't tell the admins.

Joking apart, one of the the guys I usually meet up with on my trips is none other than David Wilson himself - admin extraordinaire. And don't forget the totally awesome Long Island get together on the 15th. See the GTG forum for details. A great thing to get to this year as it has been in 2008 and 2009. I'm crossing the pond just to be there for the third time.
