Valentine's Day

I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon.

"Cupid (Latin cupido, meaning "desire") is the god of desire, affection and erotic love. He is the son of goddess Venus and god Mars.

In popular culture, Cupid is frequently shown shooting his bow to inspire romantic love, often as an icon of Valentine's Day. He is now in the current culture the personification of love and courtship in general."

Wasn't too hard to find.

Bingo. The winged, diaper wearing, bow brandishing cupid that we see is only a representation of the demi-God.

EDIT: I think the question may have meant to ask is "Why is cupid represented as a toddler with a bow and arrow?" Which is a frakkin' good question, lol.

I guess it may be something to do with the baby being a symbol of fertility?

Most classical depictions of him aren't as a baby though, more of a young man; the toddler image seemed to have been introduced in the 19th century when everything was 'romanticised'.

That's what I was thinking. If that's the case then guys should be getting to do a lot more than spend oodles of cash on their women . I don't mind Valentine's day so much (don't get me started on the associated commercials though) but I think it would be nice to have a "reciprocal day." The Japanese have White Day where gals get stuff for the guys in March I believe.

It seems that Cupid is being depicted as a cherub.

On the plus side, the ending of Cupid's life gave us some really sweet grooving courtesy of Mr. Pat Badger.

Firstly, a man must spend oodles of cash in order to get a go at a woman, that everyone knows.

Secondly, there is just a day that is reciprical, it occurs on March 14th, and is called Steak & BJ day.
