"...according to Polk County Public Safety, Edward Weiss III found a World War II-era pineapple grenade at the home. The original contents had been hollowed out, but the shell had been refilled with a black powder..."

Stunning!..

Officials say Weise found it, got a lighter and ignited the explosive.
I'm sorry, call it cold hearted or what have you, but there is simply NO EXCUSE for doing a stupid thing like that.

You know how your parents always told you not to play with matches? Well, this kid was apparently not intelligent enough to heed the warning and had to learn the lesson the hard way.
Maybe he thought the grenade wasn't going to go off, but this is just like holding a gun... ALWAYS treat it as if it were loaded, even if it isn't.

Aside from this kid being only nine years old, if his parents were smart enough to tell him not to play with matches, then they also would be intelligent enough not to leave a loaded GRENADE lying about.

Gad!...

A sad story none the less, while the kid did do something that I would consider stupid, its not his fault, he obviously inherited the lack of intelligence from his parents as they seem to relish the idea of stuffing things with black powder and leaving them hanging about the house.

Please look out for your younger brother ('part of the older brother job description).

It's hard to relish an I-told-you-so through tears.

I'll go with Simo on this one. There's a bit of stupid spead all around in this story.
Stupid hurts....
I still feel really bad for the kid and the parents though.

I am amazed he lived and it will be interesting to see what happens to the parents. I thought people like that were suppose to be removed from the gene pool before they had kids?

NOTHING that happens up at the north end of Lakeland FL. suprises me..........NOTHING The gene pool at that end of town has no deep end. I'm suprised the blast didn't set off a secondary meth lab explosion

It turned out to be stupid, but I bet it was intended to be awesome! I could see myself screwing around with explosives when I was 9 years old.

He's gonna pay for that one moment for the next 70 or 80 years........

No one knows the extent of the injuries. From what the Sheriff said, it was BAD. It may sound callous but I'm sure many have thought the same thing....... In situations like this, even for a young child, to die MIGHT very well be a blessing IMHO.

I thought it. Living a long life blind, deaf and without arms really doesn't hold much appeal for me.

Grenade in a home...

--------

Back in the '70's I recall reading some real head-shakers in an article about WW2 souvenirs/live ordinance being confiscated from some people's homes.

One aging veteran had a picket fence surrounding his property which neighborhood kids used to whack on with sticks just to annoy the old guy.

The fence was made out of still-live ground attack aircraft rockets.

That in addition to probably being burned head to toe. Thinking of the best outcome is human nature and with this situation there's probably not much of a best outcome.
