I was bummed to hear about it, too. I heard about it on the Stern Show the other day, but didn't get around to checking OT to see if there was a thread about it till now.

Didn't know him for his music, but what a unique writer/artist. RIP.

I completely missed this thread (the title might be part of the reason) as well as this news. Sad, indeed. While I didn't get around to his written work beyond a little browsing, Jim was clearly an original. I remember People Who Died actually catching on on the radio back then for a bit, what a breath of fresh air it was on the airwaves. One of my favorite current bands, The Drive-By Truckers, often plays it during their encore. RIP.

I had the priviledge of performing possibly the last three musical performances of his life onstage in his backing band. The pre-show conversations were always eye openning and incredible, such a cool laid back cat. I've always considered those to be a highlight of my musical career.

Still very down about all this. I wish i could have been at whatever service there may have been. We are working on a tribute show soon.

Heck... the media was about three days behind in actually reporting his demise.

I am one of those people that was introduced to Jim via "Basketball Diaries". I was intriqued and went on to research this very interesting person a bit more... I'm sure I just scratched the surface.

I was a teen in the '70's and while I do not regret being a strictly hard rock guy (Black Sabbath, Led Zep, AC/DC, VH . . .) I truly do regret not at least appreciating punk.

Just over the last year or 2 I've really discovered The Clash, The Ramones, Minutemen, etc. The fact that I learned 8 Ramones tunes in about 20 minutes speaks volumes about how much can be "said" with so few "words".

I intend to check out some of this gentleman's stuff.

May God bless his family and loved ones with peace and understanding.

Yeah. His music definitely had alot more depth than your standard "3 chords and oy oy oy" type "punk". It had its own stamp, the lyrics were wonderful and unapologetic, raw and gritty stuff. Definitely from a poet's mind with a "NY rawk" edge. Pick up "Catholic Boy" and listen start to finish. If you give yourself to it, it'll change your life. fantastic work.

"It's too Late": one of the best bass riffs, ever. Bar none.

Never heard of him - but R.I.P. regardless. Every musician contributes to someone's life.

Wow. One of my favorites from the '80s. RIP indeed.

Now for the weird... Today, in this thread, is the first I heard about Jim Carroll's death.
But, last weekend while I was doing some machine work, "People Who Died" randomly came up while I was playing a 500+ MP3 collection.
( I had just acquired this whole collection of "alternative rock" mp3s, and I didn't even know that the JC band was in there.)

I had lost my JC Band tape years ago, and I haven't heard that song in years. I was very pleased when the song played, it made me wonder what JC might be up to these days. Well, now I guess I know. Spooky, or just a coincidence?
