VGA to HDMI converter??

Sign in to disble this ad
Our new 60" TV has a HDMI input. I'd like to hook my computer up to the TV for surfing but also to have better view of Hulu shows. My daughters love watching old TV shows on Hulu. I've seen various VGA to HDMI converters. How well do these work? I'm really not wanting to buy a new laptop or desktop as I already have 4-5 around the house. I'm hoping a quality $50-70 converter would work well.

Can't you just get a VGA to DVI adapter and use a DVI to HDMI cable?

For some reason, I was thinking I needed an entire converter due to audio. Won't the cable just transmit the video portion?

Like this: Amazon.com: Component video (YPbPr) / VGA To HDMI Converter With Auto Up-scale: Electronics

No. VGA is analog, HDMI is digital. You could make the connection, but you won't get any picture.

To go to HDMI from anything other than a DVI-D signal you'll need a converter, not an adaptor. You *could* run RCA audio from your PC and just convert the video signal to HDMI, but due to the processing involved with an HDMI signal you'll notice a lag between the video and audio. So yes, you need to purchase a converter so you can send video and audio via HDMI. Gefen makes some great ones...never used or gotten feedback on the one you posted a link to...

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Or you could just buy a cheapo video card with HDMI output...

Monoprice.com is the place to go. Because you're going from analog (VGA) to digital (HDMI) you'll need a convertor vs. an adapter and Monoprice has several, some below $50. Make sure you read the reviews. Here's one for $30 For only $27.34 each when QTY 50+ purchased - VGA to HDMI Converter | VGA to HDMI Converters

Make sure you get an adaptor that does VGA -->TO HDMI. They also have HDMI to VGA and that won't do you any good in this situation.

Depending on how far away the TV is from the computer, one option is to put the convertor near the TV since it's usually easier to hide stuff around a TV. you'll just need a short HDMI cable to go to the TV and they have good ones for $5 or less. HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!

The connection to the computer will need video AND audio and Monprice has VGA audio/video cables available. I have a 25' one and it works great. VGA plus a 3.5mm to go in the line out on my laptop. $10 For only $8.85 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 25ft Super VGA HD15 M/M CL2 Rated Cable w/ Stereo Audio and Triple Shielding (Gold Plated) | SVGA Cables with 3.5mm Stereo Plug

FYI they also have 3 way HDMI switches (with remote) for switching multiple HDMI devices through a single input for next to nothing that work great, all sort of quality cables and adapters, etc. I've been using them for years without a single issue. The prices are extremely low for the quality you get.

You could be up and running with the convertor and both cables for around $50 or less delivered.
