If that moves you, it moves you. Everyday I turn on the TV, I hear about some puppy mill is SW or Central Missouri that has just been raided. Millions of animals are mistreated and abused in the USA. You may very well have neighbors or even family who have done the same (not trying to get personal, just thinking about the prevelance of animal abuse.) Anyone concerned about animal abuse has lots of work to do without being fixated on celebrity victims who now have it better than 99% of their peers.

OK.... I won't be drawn offsides by the "neighbors or even family who have done the same" comment (my family doesn't feel the need to "keep it real"). To your point that this happens all the time, that's true and tragic. My contention is that this guy being in the NFL says a lot about the Eagles, the League, and sadly, the fans. That we permitted this to happen is contemptable.

victim??? hardly.....this guy is getting a pass from a lot of people who would normally throw him under the proverbial bus, simply because he can throw a football....and i would wager that he has had that pass ever since his middle school coaches noted that he was a prospect....

....it would be bad enough if some broke ass dude was earning his living from fighting dogs, but i find it far more reprehensible coming from rich, pampered, scholarship educated athletes/celebs who would amuse themselves this way

Jim and Turock, you guys so badly want to believe something that you half-read what I wrote to try to make your point. No where in my post did I mention Vick. The celebrity victims I was referring to are dogs that he owned. One of which was the subject of a story that fo shizzle posted.

...despite the fact of your Cowpatty fandom, on this topic we are 10000000000000% in agreement.

Doc, just because there is constant horrific treatment of our fellow living creatures, of any species (including the human variety) in no way ever forgives any one act. Tolerance or acceptance of even one act such as this should never be given. The ability of the person in question in this story to go out and earn a 7 figure salary playing a game after what he has done disturbs me deeply, shakes to my core the love I feel for the game he plays.

Thankfully, there are others out there that make up for the fact that there are dirtbags playing the game - see my avatar for an excellent example of a great person that happens to also be a great athlete.

I'm just adding some perspective.

Which I appreciate, approve of, and totally understand.

Just never let "perspective" cause us to lose sight of the fact that even the tolerance of ONE bad act is unacceptable - acceptance is approval.

Victim?

Mike Vick is a victim? Seriously?

He got way LESS punishment than he deserved, suffered way less than he deserved to financially - and he's a victim?

Victim implies your misfortune is due to an outside agent. That just isn't even close to the case for Vick.

...and the dogs aren't "celebrities" although they're definitely victims - and they don't have it better than 99% of their peers. Although the number of other dogs that do have it similarly bad is disgustingly large.

Aborgman, read the whole thread. I was not talking about Vick.

No, you claim you weren't talking about Vick... your original post certainly doesn't make it clear, and the idea that these dogs are "celebrities" who have it better than 99% of the dogs out there is just ludicrous.

I think those dogs do have it better it than 99% of animals that have been abused.

BTW, I think you know I am not affraid of an argument. If I meant Vick, I would not be afraid to say so.

I disagree.

I think you like to insinuate, then step away from the insinuations... like bringing in a racial angle, then claiming you didn't.

You often claim it's other people reading into what you say - but based on your posting, I think you know exactly what you're saying and how it will be taken, but couch it in such a way as to provide plausible deniability.

You're way too intelligent (based on your posting) and experienced posting here to not know exactly how your postings will come across.

I posted something in the last Vick thread...

I agree with Gard almost 100%. Athletes need to be held to a higher standard. They are the role models and idols for children in this country, and they need to be held fully accountable for their actions.

I've recently started to dislike the team and sport I've loved because of off the field issues. Its a shame to me that I turn on the TV and see our starting QB beating a man in the women's restroom in a club, instead of supporting something like new books for schools, or big brothers/big sisters.

However, Vick has served his time (however weak a sentence it was) and until he makes a mockery of the rules again, I believe he should have a fair shot at a second chance.

What bothers me more is the repeat offenders that are still playing sports. The Kobe's, AI's, Pacmans, Roastburgers (I know that isn't his name, but after eating an ARBY's sandwich with him being to the tv, it stuck), etc. are not only still allowed to play, but they are the idols and stars of their teams.

Pardon one offence and you encourage the commission of many.- Publilius Syrus.

So unfortunate he wasn't adequately punished, our judicial system isn't to great at that.

I know what I meant, and I was talking about Vick's dogs. If you don't believe me, you don't believe me. I know what I meant, and I think that if you read my initial post in the context of the post I was responding too instead of your perceptions of my "agenda," it is clear that I was talking about the dogs.
