Visiting New York City - where to stay

Sign in to disble this ad
My wife and I will be visiting New York City in September and would like some recommendations of places to stay. We first visited several years ago and stayed at a hotel across the street from Carnegie Hall, several blocks from Central Park. The room wasn't very good but it was a nice central location. That room now cost almost $400 a day and we would like something less costly. We like listening to live music, watching people, trying different foods and seeing historical sights. We plan on being in NY for five days. We've searched the web but are unfamiliar with the various locations. Any help will be appreciated.

I can't recommend a specific hotel - having stayed in only one years ago, before I relocated here. But in general terms, I would suggest you consider some of the smaller, funkier hotels downtown - rather than the large, high-priced chains in midtown that tend to draw the tourists. Specific areas to consider: Chelsea, Greenwich Village, SoHo and Tribeca on the west side; Murray Hill, Grammercy Park and the East Village on the east side.

As far as your interests are concerned, that's not too relevant to the hotel you choose - as you can find those activities all over the city, within a short walk or cab ride. If you'll be in Manhattan, start by looking for places below 34th Street. Check out some online resources such as Trip Advisor or even About.com.

Good luck,

MM

I recommend The Gershwin Hotel in midtown. My girlfriend and I stayed there when we went to NYC and were very happy with it. Its in a good location and the interior and vibe is nice. Its still got a bit of NYC grunge to it, but we were only paying about $250 per night and were very happy. Ed Fuqua recommended it on here some years ago.

"New Yorker Hotel" is fairly inexpensive for the location - recommended.
