Visiting San Diego -- any suggeestions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am going to San Diego tomorrow for the weekend. I've never been before so I'm pretty stoked about the trip.

My wife is going for a business conference and I'll be tagging along so I'll be free all day Friday and much of Saturday. We'll be staying at a resort on "Hotel Circle" near the intersection of I-8 and Hwy 163.

Besides visiting "Bass San Diego" (where I will FINALLY get a chance to play a Dingwall! ) are there any other things that we simply "MUST DO?"

I'm open to any suggestions!

I just spent a few days there for a wedding. I'm not local by a long shot but I had a great time sippin' some pale ale on the Marriot rooftop bar, wathing the workers clear the stadium bleachers after a Padres game. The Gaslamp district is pretty cool at night (you can take the Metro there for $2.50). We ate at a Mexican restaurant called La Peurta, which was fantastic. Was not able to make it to a music shop but very impressed with the city iteself. Have a great time.

Take your passport and go to Tijuana. I know crime is pretty bad in Mexico, but if the locals say its cool, go there for short trip. I would also go to the beach and chill. I took my wife to LA/San Diego/Tijuana years ago on a belated honeymoon, and she loved it!

San Diego Zoo is great. Definitely hit a taqueria. Juanita's in Encinitas is one of my favorite.

Just went there a few weeks ago. The Zoo, Seaworld, and Mission Bay/Pacific Beach were the highlights. Rent a bike and ride up and down the boardwalk, very interesting eats, drinks, and sights. Better yet, grab a board and hit the waves. Jake's restaurant at sunset is a real treat. San Diego definitely appealed to the beach bum in me.

Museum of Man isn't very good but the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art is worth checking out if you like that sort of thing. On going to the beach, Windansea is good if you're a real water person, PB is good if you're more a tourist type, and OB is good if you want to see some weird local stuff.

Don't do it. You'll be obsessed until you can afford one, or you'll end up like me and you'll buy one and then sell it in order to fund building more just like it.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. TJ is one of the most dangerous places with ridiculous murder rates these days, and it's one of hotbeds of this whole Mexican drug war thing.

I was there 7 or 8 years ago, and it was the dirtiest, nastiest, most filth-filled place I have ever seen. Do yourself a favor if you go to Mexico, and drive through TJ and hit Ensenada or something instead.

+1 I've never been, but considered visiting for a little while. I would mention it at work, and to a fault, ALL of my Mexican customers told me not to even think about it. Way, way too dangerous. Especially for an American, and they can smell an American from a mile away.

I was there it was 2002, and I was mugged in broad daylight on a crowded street in front of police. I will never ever go back there, especially considering how much worse it is now.

I lived in San Diego for about 3 months in 2005, and at that time, people were explicitly warned not to cross the border into TJ for any reason.
