Question To Vista or not to Vista?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am waiting on the delivery of my upgrade kit for my PC. 4g of A-DATA DDR2 PC6400, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.67GHz and Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L mobo.

My question is should I try vista or wait till service pack 1 at least comes out. I have heard mixed reviews on stability and am also not really sure how much my PC would like it.

I also saw on other forums people talking about xp black. It is full of cracked software and some folks mention viruses and malware. The Virus reports are most probably due to keygens and cracks so am not really worried about it.

So should I try Vista, XP Black or stick with XP pro?

From what I gather its an XP base with the shinyness of vista. Full of dodgy cracked software. Photoshop CS2, Nero, Avast, Zonealarm.... tons of stuff.

You got XP Pro? Stick with it. Vista is Satan with an Anna Kournikova cover.

My XP system at the office is waaaaaaaaay more stable than my dad's Vista system at his house...

Mac has been a let down (as Windows in general), but i'd still get another one.

Still running XP, and may skip Vista altogther.

I hate all of Vistas wizards. They are very time consuming, and are resource hogs. I also find it very unfriendly to power users, and confusing for beginners.

I am perfectly content with XP.

If you want "shineyness", you can still get it on XP, you just need to get a few programs to do it. No big deal.

I also love how Leopard users are all "OMG" over it's ability to have four workspaces now, meanwhile Linux has had it forever, and you can do it easily on Windows too.

Windows XP is ancient history. It came out in, what, 2002-2003? That's five years old. Think about that. You're getting brand new hardware to put a five year old OS on it?

I would recommend Vista unless you have specific programs or hardware which you know have trouble with it. Do your research on this subject. Vista offers many orders of magnitude more pleasant a user experience than XP. Forget "XP Black" whatever. Read this:

http://www.wincustomize.com/articles...aid=166334&c=1

I've been running Vista for about 8 months now with far fewer problems than I had with XP (virtually no problems at all) and would not begin to consider XP for a new build.

The hate on Vista is drastically overstated. In reality it's a great product. Believe the hype.

Don't get me wrong, I trust that your Vista experience has been pleasant, but speaking as an IT technician forced to upgrade to Vista on a corporate scale, it's an absolute nightmare. Too many frills with not enough real support.

Now I'm going to say something that may make some of you go "WHA?!??..." but if you want the most stability and reliability out of a Microsoft OS, go back to '98. The year an OS was made means nothing, just more shiny things and (supposedly) more streamlined installation and configuration.

XP Pro is stable and works well. I'll worry about Vista after it's been out for a couple of years and has hit at least SP2, which is about when most MS operating systems seem to stabilize.

XP all the way. Have both and Vista doesn't seem as stable. Also don't like some of the functionality.
