So my girlfriend got me a record player for a belated Christmas present today. Which by the way is rocking my world. But she also left a few vinyls, one of which being War - the world is a ghetto. Maybe I'm just out of the loop but man, it's so groovy all the time and bass drivin most of the time. I feel like I've been missing out. Not to mention a few of the other records I could just sit and absorb.
just had to exclaim my excitement.

Bought the platinum jazz record today. That has a bunch of goodness on it too! And B.B. Dickerson keeps my attention.

War is excellent. A great example of a sub-genre of funk that is kind of LA. It has a killer mexican folk influence in it's funk. I listen to War and I can kind of picture the end of the old hot rod scene that kind of started the lowbrow art movement that gave birth to dudes like Big Daddy Roth, and Robert Williams. I know that these the lowbrow movement was a little earlier, but I still kind of picture the two as being related, like War was at the tail end of it, and started pulling in the hispanic influence that is so evident in here in SoCal and LA. A more current example of this fusion is Ozomatli. I see a lot of similarities in these bands.

I bought my wife a record player for Xmas and we've been enjoying the hell out of it. I think we may have a War record.
We saw a billboard for War playign with The Family Stone at a nearby casino and got to talking about them. I was unaware that so many great songs were done by the group.

My favorites: Slipping into Darkness and All Day Music.

Wow--All Day Music just came up on my iPod (on "shuffle").

Yeah, something about listening to a record feels like your doing something. It's not like have a cd on and hearing it. I feel like I'm actively listening to the record.
I was also caught off guard by how many good tunes I've found, don't ever feel the need to skip through.

Ive been holing on to some of my parents records for the longest time without having anything to play them on, knowing one day I would get a record player.
My wife had done the same. We have a large collection, minimum of 100 records waiting to be listened to, with most of it being classic rock, and a little bit of punk.
I forgot to check and see if I have a War record, but I think I do, and I'll play it loudly this evening when I find it! I got caught up listening to Blood Sweat & Tears last night while playing Texas Hold'em.
