Wassail. Any ideas/suggestions/experiences?

I came across a write-up on this holiday punch in the local paper, and was thinking about making a batch as part of my contribution to an upcoming Christmas party. I have never tasted the stuff, and actually don't recall ever even seeing it, so I was hoping y'all might be able to share some thoughts, ideas, suggestions, experiences, etc.

FWIW, here's the recipe I'll be using:

2 quarts lager-style beer
5 ounces simple syrup
3 ounces lemon juice
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 quart dark rum

They've always said: "Liquor before beer, you're in the clear; Beer before liquor, never been sicker." I don't know what to make of "liquor WITH beer."
