IIRC it was always just one book, never a series of short chapter comics.

Edit: I'm wrong, originally it was in 12 separately-published chapters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen

And to answer the second question, the collected editions contain the entire series.

I got the hardback collectors edition as it was only £1 or so more expensive than the paper back.

If you haven't bought it already, then for shame!

As previously stated there are 12. You can download them via a "pirate" torrent or purchase them.

Here's the torrent Link site for all 12 of the chapters. Free of Any type of Charge.

The paperman edition contains the entire collection, complete with the comic-within-a-comic Tales Of The Black Freighter and in-world articles, newspaper clippings, biographies and memoirs between each chapter. It's wondeful

I'm guessing with the whole Watchmen fever going on right now, it will be easier to get the 12-in-1 hardback edition at any major book store. It will cost you about 25-30 bucks.

Get it. You won't regret it.
