I heard this was in a trial phase in another state. Can't really confirm it as of right now though. But I know we talked about it in my Federal Government Class.
I don't like this at all. The government is urging people to conserve fuel and be energy efficient and it seems like they're punishing people for it now with potentiall higher taxes. I'm not even going to touch the tracking issue in the cars. http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2...could%20change

I can't imagine anyone outside of the government thinking this is a good idea.

Big Brother is watching YOU !!! | Ahhhh, this must be the Iowa test program [didn't click the link].
People are driving less and driving smaller cars, so the gas tax revenue is down. This is one idea to raise taxes w/out appearing to do so.
A government ordered GPS in my car? No thanks.

I hope they track all private vehicles, grab retirement accounts, ban soft toilet paper (also being proposed), regulate what temp you can make your house (proposed in CA), ban incandescent lightbulbs, and just generally make such a nuisance of themselves that most people in America realize .gov is not their friends and start throwing the bums out. |

It'll all be made possible by a small tracking device that will be injected just under your skin.

Using GPS it wouldn't' be hard to calculate a distance between points (assuming they log when you turn on the car and the GPS coordinate) and add them all up then send it to the pump.
A sweet idea technically speaking, however the execution is less than desirable on my end.
I would feel bad for my family that lives in the backwoods of GA that have to drive an hour to get to work and barely make enough to make ends meet to end up having to be subjected to these type of shenanigans.
here's an Idea "Big Brother", so spending our tax dollars on frivolous things.

If you're going to drive a guzzler, a fuel tax is more than enough to burn the guzzlers (and you can then reduce car tax to benefit those who drive more efficiently)
EDIT: No, wait, they want to take the efficient vehicles MORE? Kudos to the petrol lobby...
Its more like road tax than petrol tax the way i see it -
