He's going to be at San Diego State under Tony Gwynn. I hope he is successful and I hope Tony Gwynn gets better and leaves chewing tobacco alone!

At least he wasn't Wayne Gretzky's son. That would have been embarrassing.

Didn't Darryl Strawberry's kid play basketball at Maryland?

Don't blame either one.

+1. Tony was my favorite player in the 80s and 90s.

That's just a rebellious phase. He will come back to a real sport one day or another

I'd quite happily play baseball for the money if I could stay awake long enough.

if i were wayne gretzky's son, i would play any sport other than hockey, unless i loved it. I mean, what if you were just an average player? what if you were below average? The media would destroy you. I mean, in that world, your dad is considered "The Great One". you have a LOT to live up to. On the other hand, you could always hope you sign that 2 million dollar contract, play for a few years and then retire to a cabin and throw out all your TVs

gretzky has been investing his money wisely over the years....i doubt if money is any great motivator.....if the kid wants to play ball it's probably because he loves the game, and if his work ethic is anything like his daddy's,he'll probably do well....

i wasn't saying he'd only play it for the money, I was merely saying that he better be really good because I believe the media would be relentless on him if he wasn't at the level (or higher) than his dad. Granted, the US media doesn't really pay that much attention to hockey, but you never know.

^ He would be eaten alive by jackals if he was terrible at hockey.

There are a couple of footballers like this. Peter Schmeichel and his son Kasper. Peter was one of the greatest goalkeepers ever, winning the league and F.A. Cup multiple times with Manchester United as well as the 1999 European Champions' League. Kasper isn't a bad keeper but he's playing for Leeds United in the third tier of the league system. Wikipedia describes Peter as 'legendary'.

Similarly there's Johann and Jordi Cruyff. Johann is probably the Netherlands' best footballer ever. Jordi played briefly for Manchester United but was never as good as his Father.

It must be hard to follow in your Father's footsteps in those situations, unless you really are doing it for the love of the game.
