US rep apologizes to first lady on 'big butt' quip - US news - msnbc.com

Please, I am interested in talking about body types, and not taking shots at politicians. This story got my attention because the Congressman sad Ms. Obama has a big butt although she has been working against childhood obesity. Frankly Ms. Obama is significant downstairs, but that simply reflects a common body type among black women. Anyone who watches track and field can see black woman who are in tip top shape who have significant fannies. The same would be true for Serena Williams in tennis. To put it another way, I doubt if the Congressman would have called out a woman saying she has big breasts because a slim woman with larger breasts is probably a body type that he is more familiar with, and it is also a body type that has been idealized in mainstream American culture.

My point is that it seems for hard for people to appreciate that there is no one ideal body type. This goes not only for women with junk in their trunks, but for muscular men and women who are in shape but are overweight according to an insurance chart somewhere.

Did he mean it in an offensive manner? I can't read the article at the moment since I'm on my phone.

To get into that argument will slide the thread into politics. The point is to recognize different body types.

Why does it seem like politicians don't have the filter the rest of us have? Whether he meant it in an offensive way, it wasn't appropriate. Idiot.

I'm always amazed why we Americans do not show more respect for the democratically selected President and the first lady.

How do you attack someone for fighting child obesity? No good deed ever goes unpunished.

Why he said is less of an issue than him citing her figure as evidence against her. He would not have cited a woman with the traditional Playboy bunny figure as fat even though breasts are nothing but fat deposits unless a woman is nursing.

He may recognize that people have different body types. But lets be honest here, his comment was made for nothing more than political reasons, and there will be dumb asses out there that buy into nothing more than, "oh he's right she does have a big butt, perceive her as now unhealthy, and think "how dare she try and tell us how we should feed our kids."

He may have his motives, but I have mine too. The issue I am interested in is recognizing different body types as natural. Every 6' man does not have to be 185; every 5' 6" woman is not 125. A woman doesn't have to have Marilyn Monroe physique.

By today's standards, I think there are a whole lot of people who would consider a woman with a "Marilyn Monroe physique" to be "chunky."

Of course, a whole lot of people are morons.

You mean a real woman's physique?

I'm not a fan of the pencil thin look.
