Anyone here have some insight on search engine optimization? Best tactics, what's now works/doesn't work?

I am not really a web guy, but a couple years ago I looked up a bunch of information and optimized my employer's website. Traffic did increase slightly. I understand it is a moving target so I am sure my recent knowledge is obsolete.

Thanks,

RS

First of all DON'T buy any SEO services. They are all full of BS. They simply don't work. They will promise that they will get you to the top of google or something, but they can't for the major search engines. What they used to to do is make gateway pages and load them with keywords.

Now the search engines filter these pages out and penalize sites that do this.

The only real way to get top rankings in top search engines is:

1. Original conent that is relevant to the keywords you want a top spot for. The content should be about the keyword and have it mentioned a few times in context.

2. Links from other sites to your site. The more links you have to your site the more search engines like google see you as relevant. Lots of links into your site, WILL result in top spots for relevant keywords. By lots of links you will need hundreds or even thousands.

3. The title tag for the page helps but is not and end all. Don't key word stuff in the meta tags, it used to work but now you will get penalized for it. One or two keywords in the keyword meta tags.

4. You can also ping google and the major search engines so that their robots come around and index you and place you in the search engine faster.
