Wedding Nails—For the Female TBers

Sign in to disble this ad
I am planning on playing one song at my wedding (we have friends playing other songs).

We all know it's IMPOSSIBLE to play bass with any kind of nails. So I keep my nails very short normally. However, for the wedding and pictures it makes sense to do something nice with my nails—I'd have to go with fake nails since I could never grow them out.

But how can I play a song with fake nails? Should I just keep my short nails, even though people will be asking to see my hand and also there will be pictures of our rings? Do I put polish on the short nails or leave them natural?

Or just not play bass? I was going to play a song my fiancé and I wrote together and he is going to play guitar, but I could just as easily record the bass and concentrate on just the vocals.

I can and do play some songs with a pick. But pressing down on the frets is kind of hard with nails!

i think you might be able to keep some sort of length on your fretting hand....they just won't be claws.
now, not chipping the polish....that's a different story.

how long did you want your nails to be?

just wondering if you could just work on keeping your hand very flat while playing up until that day and press down on the fret with the part of the finger that is on the opposite side of the nail rather than the tip of your fingers? if not i can only imagine that it would be difficult. But I'm a dude so....

I wanted them to be long enough to look pretty with some polish on them.

I could try growing them out some and see if I can still play. Normally I get frustrated if they are the least bit long and I trim them really short.

Part of me says to be myself at my wedding, and if that includes man nails, so be it!

practice the song with the false nails for a bit to see if you can do it, if you really can't just pretty up your short nails (imo short nails are better anyway...longer nails kinda creep me out a bit.). or get easily removeable false nails...tbh my knowledge on the subject is limited.

I suppose if I did most everything on the E string it could be done!

Smile You know this thread is totally sexist, don't you?

Steve Lawson(a man if I'm not mistaken)has painted nails, or at least did a couple of years ago.
But my suggestion would be velcro nails. Throw them on for the ceremony, whip 'em off to play.

Here's what you do.

During the ceremony, wear opera gloves. It will cover your nails, and add a classy look to the gown. Play your song with your nails the way they are. After the song is done, throw the gloves back on.

Then after the ceremony is over and you're doing your photos, have a friend, manicurist, make-up artist, etc throw the press-ons on your hand and polish them up. You're now ready for all the posed pictures for after the ceremony and the reception.

I'd say stick with the short nails, but that's coming from a guy who wouldn't exactly get many looks at his nails at a wedding...

Keep your nails short - short nails also look pretty with polish.

Whatever it takes, play bass. You owe it to yourself, and you will need a break.

Wow... That is actually a pretty good idea.

They have that silicone glue you could put on your nails. Its sorta rubbery and just peels off. Why not just attach the nails like that?

Check out Lydia's nails. She seems to do OK with them, but I suppose they are not considered really long.
