Motorcycles in general were always a tiny niche within the 'transportation' market. Harleys got an artificial bump in sales just before the Crash of 2008 from the Lawyer/Stockbroker crowd but that was definitely not the long-term norm by any means. As far as the author's great love, I'd be surprised if Ducati sold more than 1000 bikes a year in the United States ever
A far better comparison would be between ordinary television and its modern replacement, the computer
