Whelp, I got the call from the HR dept yesterday and me along with 3 other did not survive the latest staff reduction. I'm in the engineering group at a large A/E firm that has lost close to 500 employees since November of 08. First time in my adult life that I've been without a job. My biggest concern obviously is supporting my family and health insurance for my wife, kids, and I. Today has been hectic so far with a combination of job search, calls to the unemployment office, calls to the bank about mortgage protection, etc. Anyway, just wanted to tell those of you in a similar situation that I feel for you. It sucks for sure. On the bright side, I'll have more time to play my bass now, haha.

Oh man, and here I was mad I couldn't find an engineering job to go in to. Good luck with the job search. I know there are a lot of companies looking for engineers with some experience (which is why it's so hard for a recent grad like myself), but I'm not sure of what might be local to you.

What engr degree have you?
Are you willing to relocate? (<< I know that is a PITA cause I HAD TO in 1989 with wife and children in tow from Louisiana to Texas).
Check your PM.

Experiencing the same thing some months ago I have only one advice to go, hit the ground running, I hardly had the time to play that bass before I found a new job again.

And good luck there m8!!!

Cheers!

Cast a wide search net, use your professional network and be open to career changes.

You ain't the only one suffering-retail sucks and bills just pile up.

Lost my programming job a few months ago and found a new one within like 3 days. Didn't even have time to enjoy unemployment haha.

Seriously though, I've heard of studies that show people make their biggest jumps in salary after they've been fired; so on the bright side, it could really be for the best.

Best of luck to you though.
