Currently, I'm staying with my parents in the nice small (sort of) town of Lincoln, just North of Sacramento, Nothing goes on here. It's boring but I kind of like it that way.
Well, that all changed.
Apparently, yesterday a propane-filled rail car caught flame, sometime around noon. It's still burning right now. Nearby are four or five more of similar-sized cars, with about 29k gallons each. A lot of people have been displaced, though evacuation is apparently voluntary. They're trying to get everyone within a mile radius out, as there is a risk of explosion. A few officers I talked to expected it to happen last night, even. Thankfully, nothing yet and there's a team of experts from Texas who are trying to work it out. I'm hoping soon, since an explosion would probably be the end of this town.
I'm still at home, getting in and out is tough. We're right on the edge of the evac zone (amusingly right next to one of the centers a few people are staying at), so they have the roads blocked. Still, I'm better off than a lot of people closer, they might not even be able to go back home if something happens. Heck, I might not be able to if all the cars go off. I doubt anything will go wrong, but it's worrisome nonetheless.
So, anyone else nearby hear about this? Or do you have any other stories like this one? I've never dealt with this kind of situation before, so it's all rather surreal. Anyways, thanks for listening to me complain about my troubles, and I hope none of you ever end up in a situation like this.

The fire appears to be coming from a broken valve on the top, so I'd assume the tank body is under less stress. There's also a good mile of buildings between me and the fire, which should hopefully keep our home mostly intact. I'm more worried about the people who lived closer by, and of course the massive amount of emergency service personnel on the scene.

As for the awkwardness, this is quite a bit better than it could be, and much better than what others have gone through. Compared to people who actually have had their homes destroyed by this kind of thing, it's just awkward. Quote:
