well...... i'm an idiot

I got the car today, first day it snowed. I was in the car coming back from dropping off one friend and then was with the two others.

Well we hit a nice curve where the snow was a bit more and very slick. They were like "floor it" so i was in first gear with the rpms going rampant and the cars wheels spinning like mad, i was going slow though, about 30 kmh. I lose traction the car spins i press the brakes (abs) and counter steer, but the car just slides into a nice pole.

Now i'm thinking "oh ****" and i rear out as quick as possible and get outta there, i just wanted to get to a nice light gas station to fill up and check the damage.

Well the bumper cracked, some small chips on the hood and there are some marks on the right headlight.

Ahahah teenage stupidity now my dad will KILL me. I told him about it over the phone he didn't seem happy, hes sleeping now but boy do i fear tomorrow.

This will set me back quite a bit, its a 03 Subaru Impreza 2.5 ts.

Does anybody have some advise?

Lol.

At least you didnt total you car.

Two years ago, on my first out of town driving trip, we made it all the way to our destination (ottawa, two hours away) about 5 minutes away from the venue where the show we were going to see was.

It was raining pretty bad, i wasnt speeding or anything, but for some reason when i went to slow down at the red light, i just slid right into the back of a 15 seater van. I was pumping the brakes and everything, but we just slid.

We didnt even hit him hard, we were only going about 30 km/h, but the guys bumper was just high enough to smash in the radiator and all that fun stuff in the front.

Turns out though, he lied to the cops about there being people in his van or something like that, they questioned him for a long time.

Pretty suspicious. Im pretty sure he was harbourding terrorists and i saved the world.

Anyways, moral of the story is, it could have been worse.

Advice? Learn to drive. Learn that your car is not a toy, and that you could have hurt yourself or someone else.

Be thankful that this is all that happened, and fess up to it. You'll probably get an ear full from your old man, but you do deserve it after what could have happened after all.

!!!!! a important lesson every canadian driver should be taught but i haven't.

I'm not a bad driver my driving teacher liked me cept, i learned that in the summer and did everything then. I heard about some kids getting in parking lots to learn how to counter steer. I wish i knew and didn't go on natural press hard on the brake reflexes, maybe I would of saved myself from this problem.

Don't do stupid stuff while driving. Your car is not a play toy. One of my friends is dead because they were screwing around in the car. Do you really want to chance it?

If you want to mess around in your car, go to an empty parking lot and do donuts till your heart is content. NOT while on the road.

One thing to learn for the winter, PUMP YOUR BRAKES

This will save you from sliding. Slamming the brakes is terrible habbit to get into on slippery surfaces.

Yep... once you hammer the brake pedal into the floor, you lose all steering and you're toast.

+1

Although I miss my old weak worn out brakes, they worked so well in the snow.

Snow tires?

First day it snowed? Oil, ice and water on the road.

You're lucky.

Your non-driving friends telling you to "floor-it" and counter steer...you mean you attempted to "drift" around the corner?

If I was your old man your license would be toast.

I'm preparing to be rear-ended in the coming weeks. Michigan drivers are the worst. If you add a little snow to the mix they're sliding all over.

im suprised people didnt freak out today
usually the first snowfall is enough to make people have ceisures at the wheel and crash into everything in their path

though i wasnt on the road all that much today, well see how the rest of the week goes
and see how long it takes for everyone to get their winter tires on

we even have a law about that now
lets see how many tickets get given out for it hahaha

just take responsibility and tell your folks that you'll do whatever it takes to make it right. They will be more impressed with honesty and responsibility than anything. Of course it won't get you out of trouble, but maybe less trouble.

good luck

You should learn how to counter steer ASAP. Luckily for me it snowed on my last two driving lessons with my instructor. She would yank the e-brake up without warning so the car started to slide which forced me to learn how to get the car back under control through steering. Its become second nature to me, and with the way our roads get around here I'm glad.

I surely hope she did that in controlled situations. Pull a stunt like that with an inexperienced driver on public roads.....
