Peace,

Something accurate, available, easy to handle, and cheap for both the weapon and ammo. I don't hunt so I don't need it to take down a buck, and it wouldn't be a home defense weapon. Just sport. Also, being cross-dominate, one of the local authorities in my area suggests that people under 20 learn to use the weak arm rather than the weak eye, so something easy to shoot ambidextrous is a bonus.
Right now I'm looking at a Ruger 10-22 or Smith & Wesson MP 15-22. I do hear the .22 LR is very hard to find right now. | The Marlin Model 60 is very nice, reliable, accurate, and affordable(or was until the recent, um, insanity). My children, now in their 20's, had 4-H Rifle classes and competitions for years while "growing up" and the Marlin 60 SS we got then is still working fine.
If you look at 22 handguns be sure to check out the Ruger Buckmark. It quite amazing and VERY comfortable.
Also, LEARN Jeff Cooper's rules: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Co...irearms_safety

I'll read those safety rules now while I'm on the commode

If you get the right one, it has 2 cylinders: one for .22 S/L/LR, one for .22 Win Mag. Stupidest thing I ever did was get rid of mine.

| | | Just a few random gun-related pictures.
My brother teaching my niece pistol fundamentals in MT.
My favorite pistol. I call it Painless.
First range session with Painless. Fifty yards from a bench rest, open sights.
And today I cleaned out and organized my work stuff, including my "Active Shooter Response Kit". |

| | | | It's my primary home defense gun. Remington 870 Police Model with a Knoxx Specops buttstock, sidesaddle shell carrier, and a SureFire forend.
The Knoxx is amazing. Sucks up the recoil via an internal spring, so I can shoot slugs all day without getting sore. Plus, I can shorten it down to shoot it comfortably while wearing body armor. A normal length buttstock has me stretching and contorting all kinds of ways to keep rounds on target, plus I get beat to hell in the process. Not so with the Knoxx. |

Two rules:
1) Never point any gun at anything you don't want to shoot. Even momentarily.
2) Assume all guns are loaded all the time. | 3) finger off the trigger until you are ready to pull it.
5) Check if gun is loaded every time it touches your hands. Even if person who gave you a gun just checked it, you check it again to see with your own eyes. Same goes for when you are handing the gun off to someone. Following refer to rule #2.
Have fun dude, for shooting range i like shotguns the most. Skeet shooting is fun. I still do rifle a bit (surplus ammo = cheap) but a lot of rifle is practice for hunting. Pistol just to keep myself in form.

Be careful with surplus though! every time you put a round in, check it. I found few that were split!
