Probably crankier now. If I am, that's because most things I used to believe in and take seriously as a young man have gone to the dogs with the worldwide implementation of Milton Friedman's monetarism.

Add "most" as the second last word and I'd agree.

I'm WAY mellower as an almost-old fart than I was as a pup. When I was ten I got run over by a tow truck and had quite a bit of facial damage. Everyone is mean to the funny looking kid and I was that kid. Then the meds that I was on made me grow all at once (At least that's what I blame it on.) and I was 5'11" and 225 lbs as a 12 year old and horrendously clumsy. So all the other kids called me Frankenstein, because I was huge, moved strangely and had facial scarring. Then the teachers, principals, lunch ladies, and janitors all started calling me Frankenstein, too.

I was fairly constantly pissed off at the world.

Then one day when I was fourteen, I realized that I hadn't spontaneously fallen over in a while. And it occurred to me that my classmates were now clumsier than I was. My first thought, right afterwards was "I bet I could catch one of them now." Seconds later, my main tormentor, one of the popular kids, came around the corner of the hall, deviated his path so he could run his shoulder into me and say his traditional "Out of the way, Frankenstein." So I grabbed him lifted and put him up against the wall, locked my elbows and leaned in. (That summer I'd done a lot of sheetrock with my dad. I'd discovered that you can hot a weight against a wall a lot longer if you use leverage and lock your joints. You can also hold a 14 year old boy on the wall the same way.)

So I kept him up there until he figured out that struggling was doing him no good and that I was several times stronger than him. Once he got quieter and started looking scared, I said "I'm tired of that name. The next time anyone calls me that, I'm going to come beat you until I get tired. And I don't get tired." Then I let him drop because I was tired and he ran like a scalded cat.

Later that day I heard him telling other students "Yeah. Don't call him that anymore. He really doesn't like that."

It's a pretty petty memory, but I place it right up there with the birth of my daughter.

I'm MUCH mellower now.
