If you have small children who are used to being in bed by 8:00 PM every night (yeah , right!) expect some short term disturbances in routine. (i.e. PST)

As someone who has lived on both coasts, I personally prefer the west. I'm on the east coast now and I'm doing everything that I can to find a job on the west coast so that I can go back. So my advice to you would be; take me with you!

In all seriousness though; it's a different lifestyle on the west coast. I don't know where you're going but I lived in southern California and then in Seattle.
To me; people seem much happier and friendlier on the west coast. Of course there are exceptions and of course I don't mean the entire west coast and the entire east coast. I'm speaking of my own experiences. I am not attacking the east coast; I just think people are a little more laid back and friendly on the west coast.
Just enjoy it man. I don't know where you're coming from but if you're in a place like NY or Boston or somewhere, you'll likely experience a little culture shock; I did when I moved to DC. But that doesn't last long. Also, the drive across the US is a lot of fun. Lot's of neat things to see along the way.
If you're a literature fan, Ernest Hemmingway is buried in Ketchum, ID. May be a bit out of your way. But when I moved out here I drove three hours out of my way to see his gravesite. It was worth it to me.

It's less formal than the East Coast. You rarely have to wear a tie. Shorts are acceptable in most situations. So are hawaiian shirts. On the coast, where I am, so are flip flops. The chicks are are hot and have tan lines. All and all (there are exceptions of course) people on the West Coast are more culturally diverse, therefore more tolerant of people. If you go to LA everyone is from somewhere else and if you ask them they've all lived here for about 3 years. Our ocean is magical. People are generally more healthy, and less people smoke than people back east. By healthy I mean they tend to exercise and work out more. There are a lot of chicks who are blonde who really aren't. Funny enough, there are a lot of guys that are blonde who really aren't. There's quite a musical diversity as far as what style of music you want to play. I've talked to bass players from other parts of the country and in many places they are limited to cover bands, and country. Out here you can play whatever you want and you'll find an audience. There are different sub-cultures out here too, and for the most part they are centered around things you do, not what you look like or listen too. There are surfers, desert rats, river rats, snowboarders, skaters, street bikers, mountain bikers, windsurfers, kite surfers, body boarders, musicians (and all their sub-categories), dudes that like dudes, chicks that like chicks, dudes that like chicks and make chicks a hobby, cougars, porn stars, you name it. We've got it. It's a beautiful place.

Is it just me, or are people more pessimistic on the east coast, and on the west they seem to have a more positive outlook?

I think there might be something to this. I went to New York with a team of educators from California and they all said snippy remarks like that. Referring to us as "happy go lucky hippies". One teacher from Jersey said she wanted to "smoke our air." LMAO.

no, we're just more realistic. hard winters will do that to you.

people tend to think that east coasters...and i mean the northeast... are mean. honestly, i've met more genuinely concerned people in boston and in ny than i did in cali or seattle.

oh, and northeasterners defintely obsess more about weather. but that's 'cause we have to.

I moved out to Los Angeles 6 years ago after spending my entire life in NYC. The lifestyle is much different. People go at a slower pace, intensity levels are down, and it's generally more laid back . Also, life doesn't beat you down here like it does in NYC. By that I mean every time I go back to NY and take the subway, I notice how tired and beat the people look compared to out here.

My advice would be to get a place with a pool if you're renting an apartment. Also get a convertible. That's a good way to start your new life in SoCal.

I like the fact that I can make posts while checking out the surf. This can only happen in California. And Hawaii. And New Jersey. And Florida. And ... well nevermind. I was just trying to brag, but then I realized the ridiculousness of it. I'm a monkey.

Had a phone interview for a Denver job on Monday. Supposed to arrange a face-to-face interview in the next few weeks with them, plus I'm trying to line up a few others while I'm there.
