best advice: Always duck to the left

j/k

I'd say don't be super friendly (they will take advantage of the friendliness) and don't be to strict (they will despise you)... since its a music class I'd just be standing there with your bass until everyone gets in then lay down some cool grooves so that way they get some respect for you as a musician and not think of you as just a teacher. Also it has a lot to do with what age group you teaching.

I don't really have any advice, but I think that it's hilarious that there is a VampireFreaks.com ad at the bottom of the page!

In what way are you teaching? Is it like a class on theory or what?

Also, Master of Puppets

These are middle school youths so I would imagine general music.

Is it like band class or theory do you know? When i took band class 2 years ago (6th grade) our saxophone teacher came in there with his saxophone and just played some nice jazzy stuff and talked to us about what we would be learning and doing that year got us interested and got us the basic jist of what we would be expected to do through the rest of the year (concerts, homework assignments, learning concepts)

Teach the way you would want to be taught. Don't take it personally. Construct the kind of class you would have liked to been in when you were a kid. Don't take it personally. Treat the children with respect... and continue to do so longer than you think they deserve it. Don't take it personally. Remember that 80% of your salary comes from being able to hold your temper. You can't change the world but you might be able to make tomorrow better for a couple of the kids. The only real communication is love. There is only one kind of discipline... and that's self discipline, all the rest is manipulation.

My first suggestion (after 11 years of teaching)- structure and order are your friend, especially in a music class. Set the bar high in terms of behavior and expectations- it's easy to give them some slack once they understand and are living up to the expectations, but it's darn near impossible to gain back the ground you gave away at the beginning.

I've been a master teacher for 4 student teachers and the biggest mistake I see made is teachers hoping the students will 'like' them and thus enjoy the class. There isn't any reason to be a flaming arse, just set some very real expectations for behavior, conduct and learning. 99.9% of students are quite happy to meet clear, understandable and attainable objectives, especially for a teacher they respect. If there is a passion for the material you teach, your personality and 'fun' side will come out quite naturally through teaching. Teachers who love what they teach make for interesting learning- those are the classes and teachers that kids remember.

Don't look at porn in class. If you feel like you need to look at porn in class, don't let the kids look at it with you. If you feel like you need to let the kids look at it with you, don't take pictures of the kids and glue their faces over the porn model's heads.

I've heard through the grapevine that this could be problematic.

good advice.

I once worked with a teacher who committed the trifecta of teacher no-no's, he 1) stole money from the school 2) used the stolen money to purchase drugs, which he used on campus and 3) shared the drugs with a female student while performing various sexual activities with said student....

Nowadays the first thing I'd do would be to check for weapons of any kind.

Teach them that the BASS is it's own instrument. Not filler. Not a dumbed down guitar.

You should find the guitards pretty quick.

deconstruct what they know about rock, and rebuild from the bottom, seeing as what they already know as rock is the latest flamers in skinny ties, womens jeans and eyeliner. That's what music class was like when I was in 7th grade. We started with your basic Elvis/Chuck Berry/ Buddy Holly and worked our way up to the 80s. Funfunfun.

If you must visit the gents before or during your class, always shake it very well to ensure you have no traces of urine showing at the front of your trousers!

Otherwise, the kids will "take the piss outa you".......so to speak!

You would imagine?

Okay, here's your first priority: have a plan for what to teach!
