What advice would you offer a Teacher on their first day in the classroom ? It just so happens tommorow is my first day teaching and I will be teaching a Music class all day. The main question for all of you is do I start the Kids on Master of Pupets or and Justice for All ?

I'd say don't be super friendly (they will take advantage of the friendliness) and don't be to strict (they will despise you)... since its a music class I'd just be standing there with your bass until everyone gets in then lay down some cool grooves so that way they get some respect for you as a musician and not think of you as just a teacher. Also it has a lot to do with what age group you teaching.

When i took band class 2 years ago (6th grade) our saxophone teacher came in there with his saxophone and just played some nice jazzy stuff and talked to us about what we would be learning and doing that year got us interested and got us the basic jist of what we would be expected to do through the rest of the year (concerts, homework assignments, learning concepts)

Construct the kind of class you would have liked to been in when you were a kid. Don't take it personally. Treat the children with respect... and continue to do so longer than you think they deserve it. Don't take it personally. Remember that 80% of your salary comes from being able to hold your temper. You can't change the world but you might be able to make tomorrow better for a couple of the kids. The only real communication is love. There is only one kind of discipline... and that's self discipline, all the rest is manipulation.

| | | | My first suggestion (after 11 years of teaching)- structure and order are your friend, especially in a music class. Set the bar high in terms of behavior and expectations- it's easy to give them some slack once they understand and are living up to the expectations, but it's darn near impossible to gain back the ground you gave away at the beginning.
I've been a master teacher for 4 student teachers and the biggest mistake I see made is teachers hoping the students will 'like' them and thus enjoy the class. There isn't any reason to be a flaming arse, just set some very real expectations for behavior, conduct and learning. 99.9% of students are quite happy to meet clear, understandable and attainable objectives, especially for a teacher they respect. If there is a passion for the material you teach, your personality and 'fun' side will come out quite naturally through teaching. Teachers who love what they teach make for interesting learning- those are the classes and teachers that kids remember.

I once worked with a teacher who committed the trifecta of teacher no-no's, he 1) stole money from the school 2) used the stolen money to purchase drugs, which he used on campus and 3) shared the drugs with a female student while performing various sexual activities with said student....  |

the only thing i could ad is to make sure your reflexes are sharp...and don't take it personally. middle school kids are just creatures

That's what music class was like when I was in 7th grade. We started with your basic Elvis/Chuck Berry/ Buddy Holly and worked our way up to the 80s. Funfunfun. |
