At what age do you start to tuck in shirts?

Im 21, i almost never tuck in my shirts, unless im wearing a suite or going to an interview or something. Even when im wearing button downs, i leave them out. At what age do people start wearing their shirts tucked in? I fear that day.

I think it depends more on the situation than the age.

If you need to ask that question, start tucking right now.

Dress to look good. If your clothes don't flatter tucking then don't tuck.

If you want to dress sharply and tuck, go to the outlet mall. Dress up to go shopping. It makes a difference in what you buy and how you shop if you're going to buy 'nice' clothes.

Don't forget to clean your shoes.

Yeah, It's not the age...it's the style and occasion. NOTHING gets tucked into sweatpants...ever.

I tuck in dress shirts if I'm wearing a suit, and my work shirt needs to be tucked in. Otherwise I am not a tucker.

It's not the age, but whether you want to be taken seriously.

If you wear sweats or pajamas in public, then what you tuck or don't tuck into them is irrelevant.

+1

The last time I did interviews, I had applicants showing up in jeans, untucked shirts, etc. Not a good thing when the job required the wearing of a suit every day.

As for the age thing...

I'm 31, and at work my shirt is always tucked in. Then again, I'm almost always in a sportcoat or suit. On the weekends if I'm in jeans and a t-shirt, I'll go untucked.

Indeed. I don't tuck in my Hawaiian shirts, even when I wear them to work (which is usually). I'd be taken seriously there even if I were wearing a speedo and wife-beater ... well, maybe not. When I go out amongst civilized people, my shirt is always tucked in and I'm wearing slacks. Maybe even a coat and tie. Dress for the occasion.

Applying for a job? Tuck it in. No droopy drawers, either, unless you're applying to be a "sales associate" at Best Buy or something. I guess they like that look.

I used to tuck my shirts in all the time, but that was at a private high school where dress shirts/ties/dress pants were mandatory. Now that I'm in college it takes a lot to get me to wear a collared shirt at all, let alone tuck it in.

Exactly. I'm 42 and don't tuck unless it's work or church.

I only did when i was between 16 andd 17, going to private school. The dress code required you shop at Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, and Aeropostale. I didn't. I stuck it to the man to the end, wearing t-shirts and cargo pants, until one day i forgot to tuck in my shirt, and the jerkoff of a latin teacher they had called me out on it...then I proceeded to deliberately do things to get me kicked out.

That sounds like exactly what they sell at those clown stores you listed.

As soon as you decide you're tired of looking like a slob.

We had a rhythm guitarist once who refused to tuck in, and he had quite a gut on him....one night the lead player, in the middle of a song, signals me over and says..."look at buddy, he looks like a tent". Still makes me laugh.
