What careers are possible through music?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys. I'm a recent graduate with a degree and music and I'm not sure where to go next. I really want to work at an amp company building and designing cabs/amps. I've built a few of my own cabs with great results. Any ideas of things I could do next?

Things I've considered:

luthier school
Send resumes to record labels
Get an MBA
Randomly send resumes to amp companies

Not really sure where to go since it seems like the only jobs readily available would be teaching jobs (which I would hate). I know I shouldn't expect a dream job right now, but everything just seems so overwhelming!

Ok, assuming you typed this wrong, and you have a degree IN music, WHAT KIND of degree is it, and honestly, what makes you think you are qualified to work for an amp company designing amps and cabs? That usually requires an engineering degree and an in depth knowledge in electronics, AND acoustics, not just a "music degree".

ALSO, did you not have a more solid plan in mind when you were in your studies? If you have a music degree, don't you want to pursue MUSIC?

Did you make any good contacts during college?

You sound practical, can you run a mixing desk/lighting desk?

If you can get into it, see if you can start doing tech/stage management at a theatre/concert hall/other venue. All the best tech guys are musical IMO/IME.

Just my £0.02, if the engineering doesn't work out for me, then that's is what ima do.

Since you're already in the general area anyway, checking out Peavey in person might be a good idea.

I wouldn't say anything made me qualified to build amps because I did not go the EE route. I was in engineering for a little over a year and decided it wasn't for me.

There aren't really any local things to do with live sound really... However, that would be a pretty fun thing to get into. And I had talked to Peavey some. I suppose I should try a little harder and find out what exactly it is that they're looking for. They just seem a little hesitant to give out too much information over the phone.

The old jazz masters are ageing and passing away, take up the torch! Wouldn't it be nice to see a real resurgence and the death of techno, disco and people falling in love with music made by musicians instead of computer programmers? At least Rock and Country have solid followings.

Good luck with that. Better keep the pizza delivery idea for something to fall back on.

What can you do with a degree in music? Unfortunately, teaching is probably the only route to go there. Otherwise, go back to school for something marketable.

There simply aren't enough people out there willing to pay for what you or I would class as 'good' music. IMO/IME you have two choices as a gigging musician: keep it as a very enjoyable hobby, or sell your soul to make enough money/get famous.

A small percentage of bands (Muse, Arcade Fire off the top of my head) hit it very lucky and get the best of both worlds.

Yup, OP asks what careers? I wasn't suggesting jazz as a ticket to fame and riches, merely a worthwhile endeavor. Not all careers pay large. I was merely musing, pointing out that the youth seems caught up in programmed music and wouldn't it be nice if they embraced REAL music by musicians. And I get a NO, jeepers. Success doesn't have to be measured in dollars.
