A combination of nature vs nurture. In other words it has to do with genetics (Nature) and whether or not you grow up and live in an environment that fosters intellictual persuit (Nurture). Ill be happy to expand on this explanation if needed.

What about synthesis, application of knowledge and retention thereof? Surely that might come into play?

Nature vs. Nurture is a long time debate in the worlds of science and psychology. People who feel nature is the determining factor say that we are simply born intelligent or not intelligent. Those who feel nuture is the determining factor believe that how smart we become and how fast our brain processes cognition is a result of the environment in which we grow up.
Lately people are realising that it is a combination of these to factors. A man born with high intelligence is going to be smarter than the people around him. A man born with below average intelligence is not going to be as smart as his peers. That is the nature part.
However if you take a very intelligent person and place them in a hostile enviroment, for example the ghetto, it is going to be very difficult for him to use his intelligence and eventually his brain will shift to survival, because that is what he needs to do within that environment. In constrast if you take a person of below average intelligence and put them in an enviroment that promotes learning, their cognition will improve. This is the nurture component.

Understand?

Doesn't really answer the original question though...

I think that it is a combination of what you know and how fast you learn, but also how well you apply your knowledge. It is no use being able to learn lots of stuff very quickly if you then can't apply the knowledge.

The answer to the question is that a combination of natural born intelligence, and what kind of surroundings you grow up in will determine how smart you are.

Howard Garndener, a pschologist in the early 80's purposed the idea of Multiple Intelligences. He said people where smart in diferent ways rather than collectively smart or dumb.

More Info on this theory here:

So he came up with the theory that people have strengths and weaknesses? I didn't know that they had only worked that out in the early 80s

That's okay. Folks weren't sure that men and women are different until 3 years ago too!

Yeah a lot of psychology is like that. Basically just write down obvious stuff and give it a name.
