I ran across this elsewhere on the net and it got me to thinking -- especially since I expect my daughter & son-in-law to be starting their family pretty soon.
What did you call your grandparents? (Or if you'r lucky enough that they're still living, what DO you call them?)
Did you come up with the nickname or is it a name that they selected to be called? Bonus points for any cool stories ...
* On my Mom's side: "Granny and Granddad"
* On my Fathers side "Big Mama and Big Daddy"
As the oldest child, I had the honor of coming up with these and as best I remember, these were the names that made sense to me so those were what I used.
When I have grandkids soon, I have NO IDEA what I'll end up being but Grandpa sounds incredibly OLD!

For the Grandpa's its Pops and Pa.

Me, I'd like to be called Grandpa. It has an all-knowing, wise connotation that young children really like.

Grandmother on mom's side = Mook.
Grandfather on mom's side = Gumps.
Grandmother on dad's side = Grandma Gert.
Grandfather on dad's side = Grandpa Bud.
My Great-Grandmother, my mom's mom's mom, who will be 107 in a couple weeks, we call Minnie.

My father's parents passed away before I was born, so I never had a term to refer to them by, besides 'my father's parents'.

One grandfather was deceased long before I was born, so I never had a "name" for him. The other was Grandpa.

Mormor,
Morfar,
Farmor
Farfar.
Calling them anything else would probably be because of a speech impediment...
Small kids often make it into
Momo
Moffa
Fammo
Faffa

When my brother had his first, our mom insisted on first names again. She lost. Our mom is Nana. Our dad is Gramps. My dad's wife is Grammie Ann. My sister-in-laws mom is Goggie, and her dad is Grampa Jack.
My MIL is Grammie Sue, and my FIL Mr. Grandpop(s).
Later,

My grandmother died this past spring and she went on her own terms. She was 87 and had been in the nursing home for about two years because of diabetes and CHF - but she was still mentally very sharp and had a near perfect memory.
After contracting pneumonia for the 3rd time in 8 months, she decided that she probably wouldn't survive it this time and didn't want to spend the next few weeks with an oxygen mask on her face and sitting in a hospital bed. She announced that she was ready to go and then called all her family and friends for last goodbyes. Everyone filed through during the day then she met with her pastor and finally she had her closest family with her and then had the nurse turn her oxygen off. She joked that it was time to "pull the plug" and then laughed at her "joke". She closed her eyes and over the next 15 minutes the color drained out of her body and she died peacefully with a slight smile on her face.
I worked in a nursing home for several years and I've never seen anyone go in such a determined way. Grandma was an amazing person and I hope that I die with as much dignity as she did.
