My iPod died on friday. It gave me the little picture like this:
and told me to go to apple.com/support/iPod. It did this every time I powered it up.
So, fast forward to:
Tonight, after (again) re-wiring my Jazz bass, I decide to pull it apart to see what is wrong. It made the whole "Click of Death" buisness, so I figured it was the hard drive.
I pried it apart, took a look around, jiggled some wires, and closed it back up. Just for Gits and Shiggles, I decided to turn it on.
And it works.
I just wonder what I did to make it work. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, but just wondering...

Serial number is: 2CD5132B9 | IIRC, those were one of the last units to utilize a hard drive before the switch to solid state memory. If it starts doing that, your hard drive is probably beginning to fail. Start shopping for a replacement.
If the HDD got stuck, you may have bumped it loose again, but it will happen again.

I'll ask one of my employees who used to be a Mac Genius if he has any insight, but if I remember correctly there are a myriad of hardware things that the frowny face could mean.

I know a guy here on TB that can fix it for you. He's good. Send me a PM if you want his screen name.

I just wonder what I did to make it work. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, but just wondering... | That doesn't look like a HDD error.( just re-read you post I see that's not the real error) those look like this or or (<--I see this is the error you most likely got)
The HDD in the IPOD has acoustic sensors and other methods that can sense immanent failure. sounds like what you are getting. You could do a restore just to make sure the error wasn't a false positive.
I would definitely replace the HDD, and be sure you get a replacement that comes with a spudger and a case wedge (perfect shape to crack the case open. Just be sure when you reassemble the unit, you put the cushions on correctly. the tolerances are so tight on an IPOD even a very slight jar will cause the HDD to move around in the case, and since its the most heavy thing inside the case, it will knock components off the system board, and will brick your POD.
Good luck and go slowly... Its not that hard once you get past how freakin small the components are....

Mine does this about once every few days. I keep a small screwdriver in the car to open it up at stoplights and jiggle some stuff around. Then it'll be good for a few days. I learned my lesson when I got about 10 min into a 5 hour drive and the dang thing stopped dead, only had one CD in the car
