What did your parents teach you?

What were the nuggets of wisdom your parents taught you?

My dad taught me that "on time" meant 10 minutes early.

My mom used to say, "Life's too short to deal with a-holes."

Once, I jacked quarters from the coin dispenser at the supermarket, my dad caught me with 20 bucks in my wallet which was alot in 1986.

He took me right down there and made me pay them back and write them a letter of apology. I've never stolen anything since, except maybe a pen from work.

Dad: "Everyone thinks they're right, but they're only right if they're fair and willing to teach."
Mom: "I'm going to teach you how to cook, you'll thank me later."

A sense of personal responsibility and integrity.

And when working with wood, my dad taught me early to measure carefully. This was his memorable phrase: "No matter how many times you cut it off, it's still too short."

Among many things, my father taught me a solid work ethic and my mother taught me to be thankful. My father taught me how to work with my hands, my mother taught me how to let others get my way.

When I turned 13 my parents sat me down and said "Son, you're entering your teens. You're going to learn a lot, and the only way you're going to learn it is by making your own mistakes. Three rules: (1) don't get addicted to drugs, (2) don't get anyone pregnant, (3) always keep enough money in your pocket to call us (this was pre cellphones) if you get into trouble you can't get out of on your own. Now go ahead and learn stuff."

My Dad taught me how to spell chords (something never covered during my fairly traditional piano lessons), helped a lot with my chart reading and later got me started writing arrangements. Not bad work for a drummer, you think? He also taught me a lot about musicians' professionalism and a whole bunch of other stuff. Thanks Dad.

"Is it supposed to look that way?" would not qualify as nice, by the way. I know.

I was taught that most people on earth are evil because they don't accept our belief system.

A good work ethic, financial responsibility and to love and fear God. Both mom and dad were very hard workers and were very thrifty which got me into good saving habits. Example: when I was laid off for 14 months I didn't miss a beat with my bills due to saving money instead of spending like there was no tomorrow. Looking back, it was a nice 14 month vacation!

Dad always said "it's better to have a plan and fail then having no plan at all."
