What to do in Minneapolis?

I'll be in Minneapolis on business the weekend of April 4/5. I'd be interested in hearing about any must-see places. Museums, etc.

Also, any must-eat restaurants would be good!!

As far as museums go, we have two great ones: The Walker which has a lot of modern art and Minneapolis Institute of Arts which kind of covers all the bases. There are some great clubs in the downtown area if you are interested in live music. First Avenue (as seen in the movie Purple Rain) and The Fine Line Music Cafe. The Dakota is a jazz club that has national acts and local "progressive" jazz groups late night Fri and Sat. Even more clubs as you move out of the downtown area. There are some good restaurants downtown but you will be dealing with a high tax. So go south on Nicollet Ave and you will get to an area with many restaurants nick-named "Eat Street." Just about any type of food you can think of. My favorite is a little place that does Trinidadian food called Harry Singh's.

Cool. Looks like there's a promising bbq joint. I'd definitely like to find out about some music going on while I'm there.

Are there any good music shops?

If you're into good beer, check out the Townhall Brewery. Excellent bar, excellent beer. And the food is nice, too.

Not much in the downtown area. The coolest place for basses is over in St. Paul called Willie's American Guitars:
http://www.williesguitars.com/.

Another one is My Music which is probably 15-20 minutes from downtown: http://www.my-music-store.com/.

Make sure to catch the weekly Blues Jam at Famous Dave's restaurant on Sunday evening. Great Food and lots of really good music!

+1 on the dakota. The food there can be hit or miss though... the apple glazed salmon wasn't as good as one would think

Another store that I'd consider hitting is the American Guitar Boutique in Maple Grove, if you have time and can make it out there. Not a huge selection, but they had some pretty cool stuff there when I was there a couple months ago.

Thanks, but I'm sure I'll be the only one at the conference that doesn't make that trip. We've got malls here. I don't care how big it is.

Got in about 2:30 local time. Took the light rail from the airport to downtown, and then hoofed it about 8 blocks to the hotel. Nice downtown.

Had dinner at Peter's Diner. Nothing like having some turkey and dressing with apple pie. Cool spot. Good food.

Dream Girls is a fun place to check out. Also The Local is a nice Irish Pub to get a pint. Oh yhea and if you have not been to MOA might as well check it out. I am not sure who is playing this weekend but The Dakota Jazz club is a nice place to have dinner and listen to some music. Enjoy your stay in the minneapple. I work in the TCF building right across from Petes Diner. Looks like what I have suggested has been mentioned already...+1 on the Dakota.

Here is a link to the Dakota: http://www.dakotacooks.com/pages/spotlight.html#mckay

Too bad your not in town apr 20 -22 a Ray Brown tribute would be fun to see over a good dinner and some fine wine.

Yeah, I saw the building yesterday. I'm staying at the Hilton. I think I'm going to get some breakfast at Hell's Kitchen this morning. It looks interesting. Yeah, I hadn't heard of any of the acts at Dakota's while I'm here. There's a late night group tonight called Battlecat. For $5, I may head over.

Is the light rail the best way to get out to the mall from here? I kept saying I wasn't going, but I may have to go and pick up something for my kids. I think there is a mall/shopping area right here downtown somewhere, isn't there?
