What to do on my trip to San Diego.

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to San Diego for a conference from 1/21 through 1/24. My wife is coming along. We'll be staying at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina on San Diego Bay. It looks like it is very near the airport. We won't be renting a car.

So . . .

Where should we eat? We hate to eat at chains when we travel. What are some good local/mom & pop places?

What attractions should we see? I know the zoo is supposed to be good, but we have never been to San Diego, so I would like to see some things that are more along the cultural/historic lines.

What is the weather like that time of year? Light jackets? Shorts?

Any must-see music shops?

Anything else you can think of would be great.

Don't let my only knowledge of San Diego be what I learned by watching Anchorman!!!

Well. You're really really really really limited in San Diego without a car. Especially around the airport. All you'll find around there are hotels and chain restaurants.

We stayed right on Balboa Park in the Hillcrest neighborhood. It's Hq for the Alt Lifestyle folks, but no worries. Restaurant district in Hillcrest was great, not a chain in site. Obviously short walk to Balboa park and the zoo, both great touristy attractions.

Coronado beach is fabulous, also popped up to La Jolla which will require a car. Old town is nice, but there are chain restaurants there. You might try the touristy Trolley kind of thing to move you around. It worked pretty well for us, but doesn't run after dark.

Best of luck...

I'm putting plenty of cab money aside. Are cabs prevalent in the city?

Yes. But expensive. Distances are quite long. You'd be better off renting a car for 30-40 bucks a day. That's about what you'd spend on two cab rides.

Light jacket weather last time I was there in February, the rainy season. Eat lots of fish tacos. Ride the light rail (trolley) to get around.

Although you are probably already here in Beautiful Sunny San Diego, and not checking the talkbass message boards (the message boards for all of us bass fishers), I am going to throw out some suggestions.

First off, the Mexican food in San Diego is some of the best in the United States. Hit up any of the places in Old Town and you will not be sorry.

As mentioned before, there are some great – non-chain – restaurants in the uptown area (between Downtown and Mission Valley); check out the Hash House a go go (http://www.hashhouseagogo.com/), or the Tractor Room (the Hash House a go go’s run off restaurant just across the street).

As far as attractions are concerned:

Of course you should check out Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo.

Also, the above mentioned Old Town.

You should cruise through the beach communities – OB (Ocean Beach), La Jolla, Del Mar, and many more; rent a car and just cruise the coast if you can.

You could also visit Julian out in the mountains (if you rent a car) and get some great apple pie (made with locally grown apples) and fresh locally raised buffalo burgers.

Oh yeah, before I forget; the Gaslamp district downtown has recently been fancified for all the tourists and local hipster/scenester yuppies – you might as well check that out (I never go, but I hear things).

And the weather; of course you are already here, but… If you are like me, you won’t need a jacket of long pants – the weather seems perfect for shorts and a t-shirt.

Um, anything else? I’m sure I’m forgetting something. Oh yeah, avoid Tijuana. There have been a lot of drug trafficking related murders down there recently, so don’t go down there!!!

If I think of anything else before Saturday, I’ll post it.

Surf. The waves have been amazing. I went down there last weekend and surfed my head off. Other than that Mexican food. I'll second OB too. Killer little town.

Here's where Rachael Ray went for her episode of "$40 a Day", and I fully agree with her choices.

Breakfast = Big Kitchen.
Lunch = Point Loma Seafood.....do NOT miss this joint.
Dinner = Old Town Mexican Cafe.
Dessert = Moontime Creamery.

Here is a link with directions to each joint, and what she ate when she was there: $40 a Day: San Diego.

I have logged a grand total of maybe three days in SD. The only restaurants I remember that well are Fillipi's in Little Italy (expect very long lines!), Kitima Extraordinary Thai in La Jolla (not cheap, but great), and the Mex Cafe in Old Town. We also had breakfast at a little hole in the wall Mex place downtown that totally owned.

The zoo was even better than I expected, really nice.

We launched my buddies little inflatable boat out of San Diego Harbor last weekend and went a little north of the harbor entrance. There are all kinds of secret, boat access only points there. Beautiful. You can get there by going to the national park near the lighthouse. Lots of tourists looking at the urchin's in the tide pools. You could be one of those people.

^ This place rocks.

I go down there once on a while to visit some friends, and always eat there when I get a chance.

I would:

- Hit the zoo
- Hit the beach (and other water-related stuff)
- Go deep sea fishing
- Go to Old Town
- Go to Sea World

(Actually, I'm planning on doing all that stuff in March)

I was there a few years ago, and the highlight was definalty the Zoo. We spent a whole day there - arrived in the morning, and left at about 9.30 at night (or whatever closing time was). Where else are you going to see pandas?

I was working most of the time, but my wife went out to seaworld for the day. She enjoyed it as much as the zoo.

There were some nice bars in the gaslamp district - I was at the convention center, so it was easy to rollout of there on an evening and hit a bar.

Adalbertos on Rosecrans. Make sure you get a California Burrito. I actually have dreams about those things.
