hey guys, hows it goin.
just finished my first year of college at SUNY Oneonta. My major is Music Industry, and it went really well, taking bass lessons, taking audio production classes this next year, as well as being part of several ensembles.
Anyway, this summer i have been working at target, getting too few hours. Ive just been really bored, my friends from HS are all turning out to be duds, with a few exceptions. home is just not the same. i hate it in my small town, hate living with my parents....blah blah blah.
so lately ive been trying to think of what to do next summer, i dont really know where to begin looking though.
what i know is that i need to be able to make money and have somewhere to stay. maybe take some classes, which my parents might help me out with ($).
so my girlfriend is looking into maybe the Folk School in NC or VA i think, which allows one to work for housing and classes, which sounds pretty cool, except all their music classes are like folk guitar, banjo, and dulcimer, nothing bass or audio related.
then i looked at the obvious - berklee. wow. their 12 week summer program looks amazing, but it costs over 16grand, not likely to be approved by the Ma and Pa dukes.
so...does anyone in here have any suggestions of places to look into? im really pretty open minded on the subject, i just know that i dont want to do this all over again next summer.

I mean, what you can do for this upcoming semester is live on campus, which I assume you are already doing. Then find a bunch of friends near the beginning of the year who would want to rent an apartment or house together for your third year. Usually when that happens, you will own it for the summer as well, so you can stay in Oneonta for the summer, take summer courses and have a job in town there.
That is what a lot of people do and it is a good option, especially if you want to be living on your own. |

I have friends who live there over the summer, but they also work a lot and have summer courses, so it keeps them busy. If you have friends who stay the summer it helps a lot, but it is not the most exciting town, I know. |

while you're in college, the summer suck after 2 weeks and you can't wait to get back to school. as much as it sucks living at home, if you're living rent free, that's your best choice.
you have food and shelter that you don't have to pay for. as far as classes go, check out the local community college.

A friend of a friend got to intern at Rockafella records doing stupid things (but get used to it, that's what all internships are) but he was rubbing elbows with Jay-Z and other industry giants and from doing all that ground work, they all respected him and wrote some KILLER letters of recommendation and made a ton of great contacts.
I'm in the same boat as you time-wise (just finished freshman year). I've spent this summer working and making money (luckily got a job with good pay and enough hours... where I'm sitting at now typing this ) so that I could have some more "fun" money next year.
I was doing the whole same music business thing as you, but have switched to a broader international business major. Next summer I'll be interning with a company like Merril Lynch or some other similar big company to sell my soul to... Just do something where you will meet people who will be able to help you learn stuff about your future job of choice and a place where you can meet a lot of people who will one day be able to help you out a little. That's invaluable, IMO. The companies usually agree with me, because the best internships are unpaid .
