Depending on the airport, there could be a light guidance system that will take you right up to the bridge and tell you when to stop. It's calibrated to accomodate a variety of aircraft.
Heathrow, and I'm sure other airports have this as well, has in tarmac lighting that the ground controller can switch on, guiding you from the taxiway, across the ramp right up to the gate. It helps pilots unfamiliar with the airport.
God, I sound like a total geek.  I'm outta here.
