as an employee of academia, summer is a relatively slow time for me. hence, every summer i find myself wandering around with a bit of boredom on my back looking for a new "hobby", or at least something to distract me for a couple of months.

so what keeps you busy on your days off/vacation time? all suggestions welcome, i'm itching for something new...

Hookers and blow usually.

Not in that order though.

I have 4 days off a week so that gives me plenty of time. I use one day to clean and organize my place, and now I'm using my free time reading (fiction, health, finances) and working out/getting fit. Reading fiction keeps me sane, reading about health and fitness is for my own benefit so I don't do things wrong, and reading about money teaches me lots of different ways to save my money. I want to be hot and rich, basically.

Having 2 kids, jobs, courses, various sports, gigs, etc we don't really get any days off until Sunday. Then it's poolside and BBQ.

I work 8am to 4pm in this job - but I contract, so I work for myself effectively.

My time off is mostly spent on the local music community - I run a recording studio, run my own band (which takes up shed loads of my time) and I maintain the local music community internet forums (I wrote a bespoke band management system that I'm still working on).

On top of that, I watch a lot of films / DVDs on my nice home cinema, do various sports (mainly swimming and badminton) and organise the books for my two businesses

I have a bit of an obsession with buying effects pedals at the moment too...

I also enjoy pot

I work full time as well as being a full time student, so Saturday and Sunday are huge relief in my schedule. I usually tell myself I'm going to use those days to the best of my ability by getting up at a "decent" hour, but I rarely end up getting out of bed before noon

When I'm not doing the typically chores I have to do on weekends, I'm either at the gym, band practice or a gig, poker with some friends, or maybe even having a few dranks.

Vacation time is a whole 'nother story...

I dunno.

I'm going to find out shortly though. I get 3 1/2 weeks of vacation time every year (My year begins in Aug) and to date I still have 2 weeks and 2 days that I have to use by Aug or give back. (I aint giving it back!) I took tomorrow off, but I have a feeling I'm going to be sitting home with nothing to do for a couple of weeks pretty quick.

I need to mow the lawn, and trim the hedges. What I do with the rest of the two weeks is anybodies guess. I'll probably drink beer. Someone mentioned hookers and blow, but I think I'm going to need a hot tub to really appreciate that.........

I have no freakin clue. Maybe I'll take my box bass downtown and see if I can make enough money to cover any fines I may incur.

This is just bad!! I hate my freakin job, but I don't know what to do with myself when I'm not here. I need serious alcohol therapy!!!

between my 2 jobs and training I don't really have time off.

I guess you could count my training as what I do in my time off.

Also an academic, but a 12 month employee.

In my copious spare time, I:

- Paint and remodel rooms
- Do electrical work in the house as needed
- Do carpentry work as needed
- Keep five family cars running
- Work on my 1958 Fiat roadster restoration project
- Practice and play bass
- Serve as past president of a university alumni association
- Teach a graduate level course online
- Watch the occasional movie
- Read at least one novel a week

And most weekends this summer, I've been attending my daughter's competitive softball tournaments. That leaves me about a half-day a weekend that's not committed.

Boredom? Never heard of it.
