What is Existentialism?

Can someone explain to me what Existentialism is? I have a very rough idea of what it is, but looking it up in simple searches in google hasn't really helped. Maybe give me an example? Thanks.

Existentialism is whatever I say it is. If you don't agree, you're probably right.

It's what Major Metal is doing here. Creating a meaning and essence for his life.

i drink therefore i am.(or something like that.)

Descartes walked into a bar. The bartender asked, "would you like a beer?" Descartes said, "I think not," and ceased to exist.

The core essence is that the humans are creating their own values and meaning, there's no higher power who controls the world and our life/soul, ie. everything is meaningless unless we self decide to create meaning in our life. The world is just a shell we built spending our time trying to find meaning, and so forth.

My personal main philosophy for my life and how I choose to look at the world, has a strong belonging in existentialism, however, I also do believe that we all are connected in some way, kind of as the buddhist idea of a common soul, though I prefer to call it that we all share the same energy (as everything we know of, is created from energy...) ..

Interesting subject indeed!

Or rather, there is no meaning of life, but if you think there is, you do exist...

OK more Descartes jokes...

Descartes walks into a bar, then goes out the back, circles around, and comes back in. He does this several more times, and finally the bartender says, "You're going in circles!" And Descartes says, "Thank God!"

Descartes walks into a bar. Then he says, "Ouch!" You would, too, if you walked into a bar.

Descartes walks into a bar, and tells the bartender, "I'm excited about the live entertainment tonight!" The bartender says, "Yeah, the trick pony is pretty cool." "The trick pony! I thought it was Karaoke Night! I was looking forward to it so much." "Well," says the bartender, "we can do that, too." So they got out their schedule and put Descartes before the horse.

Read the works of Jean Paul Sartre. That will get you started.

Being and Nothingness and No Exit are good places to start. I spent a few years working through the finer points of existentialism and it ended leading me back to where I started. I wont elaborate further or I might break some OT rules. PM if interested.

ROFL, reminds me of a lot of people I know.

Existentialism is also the way to win any argument about anything EVER, or so has been my experience.
