What expirences have you had with skunks ( the animals) ? Last nite out here in PA I had my first expirence through glass thankfully of skunks. I saw a pair out back having a midnight play date, pretty interesting. I cant say for sure I know the smell of a skunk though, I might have smelled it but not have known that that is what it was.

We get them around where I live and I'm somewhat in the city too.

At one time there must have been a nest close by as I would get them in my back yard on a regular basis. They're pretty much use to us, but you don't want to get too close or they will use their defense mechanism. Once I heard one digging around in the back yard and tried to get rid of him by turning on the floodlight. It didn't bother him at all and he went right on with his business. I just didn't want anyone walking into the backyard when he was there so I just kept the light on.

As far as the smell goes. You won't forget it once you smell it. Dogs are usually their victims. Once, the smell woke me up from a sound sleep and was so bad I could taste it. I couldn't imagine being in direct contact with that. I got up, turned off the air conditioning, shut the windows in the other room and tried to get to sleep with my head under the covers.

I know it happen to someone I worked with. I noticed he smelled like skunk, so I asked him about it. Apparently his dog got to close, got spayed, then went back into their house. They spent the whole night washing the dog and wound up throwing out a lot of clothing and whatever the dog came in contact with. Nasty stuff.

We live in the woods. Skunks abound. In summer when things get dry they drink from our fountain, and we have to keep tabs on the dogs that they don't get skunked in front of the house.

I've been skunked badly (from about 10 feet away - with dogs, of course). A mom and 4 babies, all lifting their little tails and spaying.
Tomato Juice DOES work at removing the smell, there are other remedies as well, but bathing dogs in tomato juice is pretty funny.

I've also had a dog that didn't mind getting skunked, and would kill the little buggers on sight. We minded her getting skunked (stinky dog) but she didn't seem to mind at all.

Skunks love salt.

While camping one night one got into the vestibule of our tent...stole a hiking boot. I'm assuming it was a young one since it didnt get too far.

We heard rustling and were about to turn on a flashlight when I realized it was a skunk. Getting sprayed inside a tent would've been way too much fun.

They're one animal I'd rather view from a distance.

Quite a few, living in the middle of woods on a lake in Maine.

Most we're innocent enough, just walking around the edge of the yard. I've also had to shoot a couple for causing trouble. Every now and then they'll pull a raccoon and tear stuff up ( lawn chairs, any shoes left outside, towels, etc) and I'll shoot them. I just give them to my neighbor down the road who collects pelts and furs. I think I've pretty much eliminated the troublesome ones.

My only experience with them is skunk roadkill. They smell pretty bad, but since they're roadkill the odor isn't very potent.

Dogs and cats usually keep them away out here unless they are messed up. Normally they roam about here at night and you know when they are close by wind direction and "heaviness" of the fumes.

Like a previous post, a few have been removed with Mr. 22LR but those were ones wandering around during the day(not normal) and also acting confused(also not normal). Reference for the "reasoning":

Clinic receptionist Amanda Fiala confirmed receiving the positive test result for a sample sent in May 30. According to a Wharton County Sheriff's report, the skunk was shot in the area of CR 403 near the Danevang Lutheran Church by Wesley Miksik, Sheriff's Lt. Danny Marek said.

The report states the skunk was out during the daylight hours, one of the common indicators of a diseased animal.

"When you see a skunk out during daylight hours, particularly during the middle of the day, you need to treat it like it is rabid until it is proven otherwise," Texas Department of State Health Services Houston Region Zoonosis Veterinarian Paul Grunenwald said.

I was out testing my old hot rod one night and spotted a whole family crossing the road. Hopefully, I didn't hit any but they sure hit me. It was a long time before the smell was gone completely.

They smell awful. They make the dogs smell awful. They eat chickens. I do not think highly of the little .

My experience with them?
Well, I've only seen them in Donald Duck cartoons. No such things here.

I used to spend part of my summers working on my grandparents ranch.
Being a city boy, I once brought my best friend down with me so he could get a little taste of rural life.
My grandparents would go to bed early and he and I would walk down the road to a school bus stop to smoke cigarettes and other organic combustible material.

So we're sitting there and what should appear at the door of the shelter? Mr Skunk. Needless to say we booked outta there and damn if the thing didn't start chasing us! Easily outran it, but was kinda weird - esp in our state of mind!

Dogs have gotten into 'em a couple of times. Have a de-skunking recipe consisting of:

3 gallons of water
1 tblsp dishwashing detergent
1/4 cup baking soda
1 quart hydrogen peroxide

works.

feel sorry for the ones that don't make it across hwy 101. *phew-whee!*

They're very common here. They're actually pretty docile. If you don't mess with them you can get close without getting sprayed.

We get them all the time up here. Terrible smell, but very distinctive.

They dig up my lawn pretty bad in spots. I guess I should invest in some grub killer.

There's nothing quite as terrifying as letting the dog out when I get back from a gig at 3:00am and catching a whiff of skunk right after she bolts out the door. So far, we've been lucky.

I have a skunk that comes out at night and raids my neighbors catfood. I have to be careful when I let my dog out if it's after dark. If I smell the skunk, she doesn't go out for a while. Skunk to me smells kind of vinegary...with a whang.

I ran over a dead one yesterday. Smell doesn't bother me. The smell of marijuana reminds me of skunk.
