A .22 is a fun gun to have for recreational shooting, I have a Ruger and 5 large clips for it. It's a blast.

| | | | shotgun you need a shotgun, its alot easier to hunt birds (althought i do love the challenge of taking grouse with a .22) and its arguably better for targets.
theres a few fine things a man should own in his life. fine watch, a nice suit, and a nice shotgun. get a nice remington or winchester and pass it down through the family. |

If you think you are interested in hunting your VERY first act should be to enroll in a hunters safety course... the rest will just naturally follow.
Sorry... don't mean to be crass but you're going about this all wrong and don't really show any compelling reasoning for needing a firearm.
Please be responsible... |

...but truth be told, the only reason anyone would NEED a firearm is to be able to defend one's liberty from oppression when the rule of law has been corrupted.
Otherwise, nobody NEEDS a gun. People can shoot targets with bow&arrow and pellet rifles and hunt with them (but good luck taking much more than a squirrel down with a pellet gun)
but who needs to hunt when we have grocery stores?

Please be responsible... | i do plan on taking a hunters safety course in order to prevent shooting myself or a friend.
i have little experience in hunting other than playing paintball and sniping my brother.
i used to shoot squirrels with my pellet gun when i was about 7 but i would just leave them where they fell

you can get a nice, dependable shotgun for under $300.
nothing is better for home defense.
you can shoot skeet with friends.
you can hunt dove, quail, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, etc.
or you can get some slugs and hunt deer or bear!

Not only a great firearm to hunt with, a great home defense weapon as well when using the proper loads.

Ruger 10/22
cheap ammo, easy on the shoulder, infinity customizable and a lot of fun. I don't really hunt so I'm not sure about hunting with it. You would probably be limited to smaller game I'd imagine.

Make a definite choice on what it is you want to shoot and take a professional's advice when choosing your firearm. No point investing in something nice if you're just going to blow off a few rounds on the range, no point being under-equipped when you're out in the wild.
Do you have a Cabela store near you? They can sort you out with your hunting gear if you can get yourself the neccessary training for it. |

The best all-around gun is probably a 12 ga. shotgun. Their is almost no small game (especially birds) that you couldn't hunt with a 12 ga. with the right barrel. As far as target shooting, shooting clay pigeons with a 12 ga. is a blast and relatively economical. But it does require a designated skeet range and a partner.
As far as shooting at stationary targets a .22 is hard to beat. The ammo is cheap, and they are low recoil, great guns to learn on. But as far as hunting about all their good for is squirrels, rabbits, and some varmints. In most places it is illegal to shoot game birds unless they are airborne, and unless your Wyatt Erp or Annie Oakley your not shooting any airborne Woodcocks or Pheasants with a .22. The other issue is it's not safe, a 22 round can travel up to a mile, the last thing you want to be doing is swinging one around at a flying bird. Shotgun pellets fall harmlessly to the earth at about 75-100 yards.
Please, get instruction (hunters safety) from a certified instructor before you purchase.
