What I did on the NYE. BMW jet engine content.

Hi, all.

What do the tehcnology nerds do in the NYE?

They fire up this :

A friend of mine (the bloke in the blue jacket in the clips) bought an ex university educational engine a while ago. it's a BMW 8026 jet turbine with about 110lbs of thrust and 84lbs of weight IIRC. Super rare, the gas turbine version is more common.

This was the first time in 15 years that this engine was fired up, and the noise was like it should, a loud whine. I'm more of a fan of gut shattering low rumbles like the nitro funny cars and nitro V-twins, but there's something about a 45000 revs of an jet engine too .

Quite a few clips can be found here:http://www.knatte.fi/bmw/

On the first clip there's some "scientific" thrust measuring going on . On the second we tested how much pressure it creates from the bussiness end. Didn't watch them all, but as we didn't quite explode anything or burned the place to the ground, they're quite uneventful .

Now we have to decide what kind of vechicle will recieve it. There's plenty of go-carts and wheel-chairs with jet engines so that's out. I suggested a remake of the super strange air compressor "drivetrain" Dornier one man NATO helicopter, but allthough we all are single, we want to keep experimenting so that might be out too .

And Yes, I'm the caveman in the reflective work-wear.

Happy new year
Sam

I love stuff like this. Let us know when you decide what to do with the engine.

Hi.

^

Well I wore 3M Snipers and the sound level was ok, but when my dad called from the hospital I had a hard time hearing anything no matter where I went.

That little bugger is LOUD in real life and I'm just dying to get an idea about the vehicle. My Russian sidecar rat-bike could be one option. An easy one too as the engine with its cradle will fit into the frame when the bucket is removed.

You all can rest assured that when we test-drive it -whatever IT may be- You'll be among the first to know.

Regards
Sam
