I found this little guy hiding between the door and body of my truck this morning. Less than two feet long, pencil thick. I'm in rural Western North Carolina, but don't see snakes much on my property. Pine Snake?

Have eaten gator tail and I know it sounds cliche but it really does taste like chicken. So does frog legs ('DO' frog legs?). Being that they are both reptiles (Ok, OK, the frog is technically an amphibian...) and so is snake, I would imagine (and I have heard) that snake tastes like chicken.

| | | | maybe it's chicken that tastes like all these other things...
or maybe that 'taste' is the broad taste that other tastes should be compared to.
Imagine: "hmmm, tastes like rat snake and gator"

About the taste, I know a lady who cooks great snake. Or used to several years ago until some rules and regulations changed and she wasn't able to bring any more from her home country.
What can I say. Chicken. But then again, looking at her cabinets, the protein was probably one of the less exotic things she used so the dish didn't really resemble mcnuggets..

generated a slew of off color snake jokes.

...back when I was in scouting (which lasted all of 3 months, when I realized the "Scoutmaster" knew less than I did about the outdoors, and I could go canoeing and camping WITHOUT the baggage of ignorant individuals, and so quit...), we went out on a weekend hike/camping trip. One of the snot-noses with us killed a little (3' or so) copperhead snake, just because it was there, and my old man, who was with us, made him clean and cook it, with an eye to teaching him that killing without cause is STUPID. The little wanker wouldn't eat it...so myself, my dad, and a couple of the other sensible guys did.
Not bad, not exactly like chicken, but I can see why someone would think so. It had a texture a bit closer to fish than chicken, but it had no "fishy" taste at all.
I wouldn't go out of my way to find and eat it, but if I were hungry and it were there I'd go for it.

I haven't eaten a lot of snake but done right it can be pretty tasty. Had it fries, smoked and in stew. Sweetwater TX is a town that does a rattlesnake round up where they milk venom and cook snake meat and do other things. Don't worry there are plenty of snakes.
