What are "Microsoft XB" Charges on my Bank Statement.

Sign in to disble this ad
I did some googling on this and it all pointed me to Xbox related. There is only one problem with this. Nobody here in the house owns an Xbox. This has me wondering if it's something else. If anyone has or has had this on there bank statements, I'd really appreciate finding out exactly what it is.

Banks are closed today so I can't call them to question it. Either way, I'm pretty pissed off, because I know these charges aren't mine.

Sounds like XBOX Live. Perhaps someone has got a hold of your credit card info and signed up for a demo then forgot to cancel, or for a friend?

Or, it could be straight on identity theft. Call the bank as soon as possible, the very minute they open tomorrow.

Talked with Microsoft and they canceled the account and said they were launching a full investigation into it. I'm trusting the bank will also launch an investigation tomorrow after they're called.

Microsoft also said 2 accounts were opened. It's a pretty wack situation, because on the bank statement were 3 separate charges. $80.24, $74.99, and $53.49. I wish I could see the look on the douche bags face when they go to log onto their Xbox live stuff and can't get on.

I had the same thing about a month ago. 4 charges of about $80 to Xbox Live. The bank took care of it.

I wouldn't worry, just tell your bank that they're fraudulent charges and they'll be removed.

I had a similar problem just 3-4 weeks back, not with XBox tho, luckily my back has a 24/7 fraud line and I got things cut off ASAP (actually, it was one of the companies that had been bought from that picked it up as suspect and tipped me off, before the credit charges had been listed on my account!)

Get this tho, it's great:

~£50 (in two seperate transactions) to an internet dating site.
~£80 on flowers from a florist (Interflora who were amazing and gave me the heads up!)
~£100 on flowers from another florist
~$50 on a subscription to Soap Opera Digest

Seriously, not what I thought credit card fraud would have been used for!

You can never tell what they buy. As a guess, they may purchase anything that looks "low profile" that they still want. I encountered my first problems like this ever about 6 months ago with two fraudulent Home Depot charges--in another state no less. The bank took care of it right away. They flagged the purchases and then gave me a call.

Hah, if only!

It did make me be that bit more careful on the internet. Now I never buy anything online with debit cards, only use the credit card (and just pay it off straight away).

Simply because you have that bit more protection with a debit card

Couple of months back I got about $7000 in Apple Store charges. One phone call, one signature on the "nothing to do with me" form, done with.

This is why you should always use a credit card instead of a debit card for anything that involves giving your number to another person or website - the legal protections are much higher. (Of course, pay it off in full every month, though).

Yeah, this happened a couple of times to me. Got signed up for some websites with subscription charges, someone ordered blank business cards, and some videos. As soon as I saw these unknown charges, ( I pretty much check my bank account everyday) I notified the various online businesses and my bank (and Paypal in one instance) immediately. All was taken care of fairly quickly and got all my money back. And I got to keep the cards and videos
that were sent to me. (not that the videos were anything worthwhile)

the I-tunes bandits got me right after i bought an Iphone on my credit card. i called the AT&T outlet and they of course denied it. called AT&T, Apple, and my bank. my stupid bank tells me i must've mistakenly used the wrong card on Itunes. my Itunes acct is authorized to debit a totally different card.

i ask for a new credit card and my bank says, let's just wait and see if it happens again. at the moment only two charges of 99cents had occurred. the next day $155.00 had been rang-up!

i call and DEMAND a new card and they were still trying to blame me!!! so now instead of a simple re-imbursement i have to fill out Fraud Forms,...GRRRRRRR!!!

Somebody bought flight tickets on my credit card a couple of years back. How did they get away with that? You'd have thought it would be easy to pick up their real identity when they checked in using those tickets.

I suspect the problem was the bank, the airline and the police couldn't co-operate to identify the perp because of some weird data protection rules or something. Or maybe they just couldn't be bothered. Instead, the bank just "absorbs" the hit in such cases and then passes it all on to customers in charges.

I'd introduce more draconian punishments for this sort of thing. But then again, I'd introduce more draconian punishments for lots of things. I suspect that might reduce offending, but even if it didn't it would at least make those of us who never set a foot wrong feel a bit better about the jerks who seems to get off with nothing but a slapped wrist under the present setup.

"Three strikes and you're out" was a great idea. I wish we had something like that over here.

Time for a new bank. Such behavior is inexcusable IMO.

I had 2 tickets out of China booked on my card once. I discovered it and called it in before the flights were due. Gotta admit I had a little guilty fun thinking about how the Chinese police were going to handle it.

It's one of those ideas that needs a lot of adjustment to work as well in practice as it sounds in theory. There's folks inside for 25-to-life on a third strike of (fairly trivial) shoplifting. Not opposed to the principle, but it's a bit screwed up in the application.

A legal requirement that even non-violent criminals are permanently imprisoned for even petty crimes, and are rendered a burden on society rather than potentially reforming themselves and contributing again?

I wish I had a good feeling the police would actually do something about this. This happened to my mom once and the transaction occurred up in Pensacola, Florida.

They never got the jerk that did it that time. They said the perp that did it wasn't caught on surveillance at the 7-11 it happened at. So, I'm reluctant to believe they'll catch who did this, even though there should be an IP # to use to track where account was created.

We're obviously on different wavelengths here. For example, I'd jail a persistent house breaker for life without the merest hint of a qualm, if I thought the deterrent would make a few other immoral people thinking about doing the same stuff resist the temptation to do something that can ruin the world of good people who've never done any harm to anyone else in their lives.

That's real tough on the guy who got three counts and gets used as an example, but who chose their actions and the consequences for them in that scenario? I'll pay my taxes to keep his cell nice and warm, no problem. In fact, I'll probably save enough on my insurance premiums to cover it. And, of course, greatest good of the greatest number and all that. No society would be the worse for excising three count felons. It's not like we have a shortage of them.

I'm sick and tired of people who commit crime without compunction, and of a system that does so little to protect people who choose not to do so because they're better than the people that do. The scales are tipped all wrong at present and it's probably necessary to go way over to the other side for a while before we can swing back to an equilibrium position.

Just curious - have you ever been burgled?

I hope they beat the hell out of them.

Good. They can rot there for all I care.

My emphasis added to your quote, by the way.
