Making noise how?

Does it sound like the hard drive?
Anything in the CD/DVD drive?
Is your PM box busting at the seems?

Do you use any screen savers? Any of the eye candy on with Vista, like the DreamScene desktop or sidebar stuff?

If you have scheduled auto-defragging turned on, as it is by default, there will be some intense HDD activity at certain times.

it could be google desktop search indexing stuff. Or it could be telling you to get a mac. or both.

I noticed that the fan on my PC would go on and off A LOT. I took the side cover off and noticed that the fan that was attached to a heat sink that was connected to ( I think) my processor was full of dust and overheating. When I cleaned the dust out, it reduced the fan majorly.

auto updates are off, I despise them. it actually only seems to happen when I have Mozilla running, for the most part.

definitely not the fan. it's as if it's downloading something or running an unknown program.

You can open Task Manager and click on the processes tab. Then sort by CPU usage and you'll see if there's a background process that's using resources.

argh! I hate vista. My wifes laptop was doing the same thing. Slower than slow. I read somewhere about the indexing feature of Vista. So i went into my computer and then right click the C: Drive, uncheck the index this drive checkbox and tell it ok. It will take 5 to 10 minutes to undo the indexing feature on every file on the computer. Once i did that on my wifes laptop it was acting like a new machine. The hard drive was no longer running constantly, and it sped the machine up noticably. I would try that first........

Is your computer appropriately protected against trojans and adware?
