For me it will probably be hoegaarten, or Boont amber ale

Just kidding. If I had to pick one I'm thinking it would be Mirror Pond Pale Ale.

Cold, wet and cloudy put our minds in another mode. We decided to drive to a little town called Lyons, where the Oscar Blues original brewery is, about 30 minutes north of Boulder this little sleepy town sits nestled over the plains in front of the Flat Iron mountains.
Back in Phoenix our local Fry's grocery store started carrying Dales Pale Ale, which we had been drinking for a few months as our regular fridge beer since we are hop heads. We are sitting in the brewery and we tell the waitress our adventure and that we are huge fans of the Dale's Pale. After a few rounds she comes to me and says, follow me, someone wants to me you.
As we get guided out the side of the bar, down a small alley and into a barn/warehouse we get introduced to the two head brewers. One was from the second location where most of the line is made now, the other is the brew-master for the original shop where they produce special high alcohol runs. So were now standing in the kettle room, where all the beer is brewed, and were explaining how we came to love Dale's. The brew-master says, follow me, and proceeds to give us a personal tour of the facility. In the cooler, I got to run my hands thru the imperial hops that make up the beer. I was slightly buzzed at this point and felt like my day could not get any better......
But it did.
A few hours later my lady and I are still in the brewery drinking with the master directly out of the kettles. We went from one to another sampling each beer. At this point I am not legal to drive, thankfully my lady saw where I was headed and stopped drinking earlier and got us back safely.
This was a few years ago, back when they were just releasing "Gubna" a super huge imperial IPA. I got to drink gallons of this in the stage just before it was released to the public. So my Colorado trip was highlighted by random chance of amazing opportunity. A memory I will never forget.
With this being said, I am an Oscar Blues fan for life.

of course, if some of you select beers that improve with age (such as Thomas Hardy barley wine)...just leave it out
carry on

Photo: Me on the (left) with the Brewmaster (right) | Rad! I've hung out with Dale a few times and used to work out w/ him at a Crossfit gym for a while. Nice dude for sure. I have a buddy that's a brewer there so we're up at the Longmont brewery a lot. My mom & dad used to live in Lyons though so I've spent many a drunken evening at the OG Oskar Blues. Good food there too. I love the Gubna, but it's not much of a maintenance beer. It's a get you drunk quick beer. G'Knight isn't too far behind though, I'll admit.
Great beers, nonetheless. |
