Right at the beginning? Is that an instrument or a person? I hear it often in latin music especially but I have no idea what makes it.

That is a VERY good question. I'd like to know myself.

It sounds more like a friction type device than a human voice to me.

That would be a cuíca, a friction drum common in sambas and other Brazilian styles

To give you an idea how it works there's what kind of looks like a little drum...maybe looks a little bit like half a bongo or something, and it's got a stick inserted right into the middle of the underside of the drum head and it descends down into the inside of the "drum". You insert your hand into the body and rub the stick back and forth to create the noise. To me the cuica in this song sounds kind of synthesized but what do I know.

Remember that song from the Beastie Boys "Check Your Head" album that had a low cuica sound in it? At least I think it was Check Your Head. It's been a while.

The funny thing is I've seen a few bands cover Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved", making the cuica sound with their voice, like a monkey. I always wonder if they just didn't know it was a cuica, or if it was just too inconvenient to bring one to the gig for the one song.

It's not exactly an instrument you'd probably want to spend money on just for one song, right?

It's a circa 1990 Casio keyboard. I can make that sound all day long on my circa 1990 Casio keyboard.

Anyone else feel like they need to catch their breath after listening to this cuica, lol? Anyway thanks for the answer. I need to add this to my list of miscellaneous percussion to acquire.
