Right at the beginning? Is that an instrument or a person? I hear it often in latin music especially but I have no idea what makes it.

You insert your hand into the body and rub the stick back and forth to create the noise. To me the cuica in this song sounds kind of synthesized but what do I know.
Remember that song from the Beastie Boys "Check Your Head" album that had a low cuica sound in it? At least I think it was Check Your Head. It's been a while.

I always wonder if they just didn't know it was a cuica, or if it was just too inconvenient to bring one to the gig for the one song.  |
